Obesity can be caused deafness in adolescents

Obesity can be caused deafness in adolescents? - Everyone knows that having excessive weight or obesity could be bad for your health. However, a research adds a long list of health risks from being overweight. This study showed that adolescents who are obese are at increased risk of hearing problems, can even become totally deaf.

The results obtained after the researchers analyzed data from 1,500 adolescents aged 12-19 years in 2005-2006. Adolescents who are obese tend to have worse hearing than adolescents who have normal weight.

"This is the first study to demonstrate that obesity is associated with the emergence of hearing problems in adolescents," said lead researcher Dr. Anil Lalwani of Columbia University Medical Center, as reported by U.S. News.

Lalwani and colleagues assume that obesity causes inflammation that ultimately lead to hearing problems. Adolescent obesity has doubled the likelihood having trouble hearing because of the injury to the inner ear can be continued when she became an adult.

Even so, more research is needed to determine whether obesity and hearing problems experienced by adolescents affects social development, behavior, thinking skills, and abilities in school.
