Negative Reaction to Good News How Can That Be
Saturday, February 15, 2014
Lets explore the dynamics of bad news and good news. (I addressed what to do when you get bad news in a prior article.)
Anticipation is the enemy because it produces anxiety and stress. When diagnosed with a serious or life-threatening illness the focus is on treatment. The anticipation is that the treatment will be successful or at least there is hope that it will be. But this is only the beginning of the journey. Eventually the doctors will check to see if the treatment is working or not. The anticipation and waiting for that first test is hard and emotional. After all, your family and friends are doing the same thing... waiting. This shared experience might feel like support or perhaps it will feel like you are responsible for their feelings too or something in between. Anticipation builds nervous energy inside coupled with negative projections and a sense of responsibility for how others will feel.
You get good news! The treatment is working. A wave of relief can be felt by everyone. There is happiness, celebration, and expectations of being well. The truth is that the waiting game just begins again for the next test and marker of your health. The next test and results follow. Perhaps it is good news again or perhaps youll get bad news. The anticipation rises again. You and your loved ones find yourselves nervous, on edge, and maybe a bit burned out with the process that you now know will continue unless the health crisis ends. The cycle starts again and anticipation gets worse especially if you have been yo-yoing between good and bad news.
Now I understand the "down" feelings after good news. The flame of expectation is lit again for yourself and those close to you. The expectation leads to anticipation, which leads to anxiety, stress and other feelings.
Feeling down upon hearing good news is also self-protection from the yo-yo effect of the cycle of positive and negative news. If you dont get too excited then it wont hurt so much if the news is negative or neutral (more waiting). If you are one of those who feel responsible for others feelings you may not even have the celebratory experience. Feeling down or neutral after good news protects you from disappointment, protects you from upset, and protects you from future projections about your health outcome.
Now you know the mechanism and the cycle that creates anticipation and the cause of low or neutral feelings upon hearing good news. Is it OK to handle news about your health status in this manner? Of course it is! There is no right or wrong with feelings. Each person manages them in their own unique way. Someone told me that staying neutral with the good and bad news is healthy. No big ups and downs allows the body to stay calm and in healing mode. The cycle and process of handling a health crisis is just what it is: a cycle, a process, life... your life.
Staying present will also help manage anticipation. That means paying attention to what is happening now instead of thinking about what has happened in the past and creating projections about what could happen or should happen in the future. These projections dont help unless you are using positive imagery to work with your subconscious mind via hypnosis, for example, which is very effective to calm the mind, body and emotions and keep you present in the now. After all, the NOW is all you, your family, and friends can really handle and staying focused in the present moment makes things easier.
Exercise: If you find yourself in anticipatory anxiety, either from past experiences or projections about the future, you can do something about it!
Get into a comfortable position with your eyes closed. Take 3 or 4 slow breaths. If your mind is still running or you feel negative feelings, just notice them. No "fixing" is necessary. As you breathe slowly, let your body begin to relax. Your limbs might feel a little heavy, your back will let go of tension, and your neck will release along with your hands and feet. Your heart rate may slow as you relax. Just keep noticing your body, your thoughts, and your feelings. There is nothing to do at all but notice. Simply breathe and pay attention to either your right or left foot. Notice your toes, heal, arch, and ankle. Draw your attention up your calf and shin, behind your knee, and in front of your knee to your thigh and buttocks. Notice your hip. Keep breathing slowly. Draw your attention up your hip to your thigh, into the small of your back, up your spine, and to the side of your back. Notice your abdomen and belly. Become aware of your chest and the movement of your chest as you breathe.
Notice your shoulder, drawing your attention down through your arm to your hand and notice each finger. Shift back to your shoulder and become aware of your neck and throat. Then move your awareness to that side of your face, including your mouth, jaw, eye, forehead and ear and your forehead. Pay attention to the back of your head, moving up to the top of your scalp. Then shift your attention to the other side of your body and let your attention travel down from your head and scalp to your toes.
That is it. You will have an experience of being present with your body, your mind will quiet, and you will relax. If you like, you can move your awareness around your body 2 or 3 times which will deepen your experience. This process promotes relaxation, balanced emotions, and being present, the space from which you can best handle the experience of managing a health crisis.
How to fight negative feelings

Negative emotions can be described as any feeling which causes you to be miserable and sad. These emotions make you dislike yourself and others, and take away your confidence. Negative emotions can dampen your enthusiasm for life, depending on how long you let them affect yourself and the way you choose to express them.
Sometimes in life, there is not a day that goes by in your life where you do not encounter negative feelings. Yo may have tried hundreds of different ways to cope with them, from trying your best not to think of a negative thought when it comes around the corner to re-framing negative thoughts into something else.
Before you submerge yourself into another trial and error method to get rid of negative feelings, I want lend you a helping hand. I can truly guarantee that if you can master this method, then youll be able to handle your negative emotions a lot better in the long run.

The key to getting rid of negative feelings is in self control, but many people get angry, depressed, jealous, irritated, anxious, confused, and worried over things that may seem impossible to overcome.
It would be pretty nice if we could stay detached to our emotions and not let them affect us and our thinking, but emotions are all part of life; they are here to stay and effect your body mind and soul.
And since a lot of thoughts come in your mind every single day, its natural that a few of those thoughts can affect how you feel. The biggest one being fear.
Fear that we cannot do it...
Fear that it will not work...
Fear that this is impossible...
Fear that this is not for me...
Fear that we are always out of luck...
Fear that we will never win...
Fear that we cannot do it...
Fear that it will not work...
Fear that this is impossible...
Fear that this is not for me...
Fear that we are always out of luck...
Fear that we will never win...
When this happens, your imaginations run wild with more negative thoughts, and this can totally cause your body to go beyond just negative feelings. If you often feel so out of sync with yourself that you start to analyze every different rational way just to get a hold of your emotions? Then what happens your brain tries to run from your feelings losing contact with your body in that way your body can actually become paralyzed? At this point the mere process of just taking action is not even an option anymore.
If youre a person who constantly finds themselves analyzing your feelings, what you need to do is stop. This will always cause you to have negative emotions. They wont go away just because you started to rame your thoughts into something differently. What happens when another similar situation comes up? What happens if its worse? Will you have to come up with another hundred ways until you rame your negative thoughts and feelings into something else? For example:
"your afraid that people will think bad of you if you do something wrong."
This is negative thinking will cause tension in your body, and youre body will then tell your subconscious to stop working. Then your mind go into a mode where all you are doing is battling with yourself endlessly through heated analyses.
"Why would people think lowly of me?"
"Who are these people to judge me?"
"Should I keep going?"
"Just go!"
"What do I need to do?"
All this talk of analyzing the situation is useless...
Emotions are psychological (what we think) and biological (what we feel). Our brain responds to our thoughts by releasing hormones and chemicals which send us into a state of arousal. All emotions come about in this way, whether positive or negative.
It is a complex process and often we dont have the skills to deal with negative feelings. That’s why we find it hard to cope when we experience them.
When a negative situation comes up, such as a negative thought or a negative emotion; let it be. Nothing outside of your physical body is actually happening; everything is going on inside of you. When you feel worry, anxiety, or fear, let it be. Accept that its there; dont try to fight it.
When any negative situation comes, be prepared for it, be aware of it, but most importantly, be conscious of it.
Sometimes when this happens, youll absolutely need to stop what youre doing and go somewhere where its completely silent and just sit there being undisturbed. This may take from hours; or minutes. It depends on how strong the negative emotion is but whatever you do, dont try to fight your negative feelings. Dont question it, dont analyze it, dont talk about it, and dont obsess or think about it.
Just let it be.
Be aware of your feelings and allow them run through your body. As hard as it may be at first, if you can do this, then you will be able to channel that negative energy into something positive later on.
Understand that whatever thought caused the uncomfort you are having, you first accept that it is what it is.
The second thing is being conscious of how that makes you feel? Specifically where is the feeling located? Do you feel it in your chest, your arms; your whole body? Maybe you cant even identify where it is because the feeling moves from place to place in your body.
Dont go into an emotional tantrum like some people do. This just feeds into the negative feelings even more. Just stay still. Recognize these feelings and actually feel them.
This may be contrary to what people belief, but the truth is your not escaping your feelings. Youre facing them straight on.
As youre feeling them, say to yourself, "I understand that this is what I am thinking about right now, and I understand that this is what Im feeling right now. I accept this."
To really understand how to accept something, sometimes you wont even need words at all; you wont even need to say what is written above. Words may cause even more trouble if you start talking within your mind again. It should be silent.
You just are just being at the moment.
You are absorbing whatever happens to be the case.
Whatever you are thinking and feeling, accept it.
You just are just being at the moment.
You are absorbing whatever happens to be the case.
Whatever you are thinking and feeling, accept it.
If you dont know something, then you dont know. Accept the feeling of not knowing something. If you truly accept something for what it is, you should feel an instant calmness to you.
Anger, jealous, curiosity, and fear should slowly dissipate from your body and you should be able to think more clearly and logically on what to do next once these feelings are gone. Youre not fighting your negative feelings; youre absorbing them and being in sync with them.
The more you are able to do this, the easier it becomes. Its definitely a skill that is worth investing your time, because if you can learn to accept the small negative feelings that you are having, then you will be able to learn how to deal with bigger negative feelings the next time it comes. Youll be so completely detached from it that youll simply brush it off and move on. Thats what youre working up to.
It definitely beats taking pills from doctors that are just a temporarily relief. If you cant accept the first negative feeling, then you wont be able to get through the others. Youll constantly have to rely on short term alternative routes to escape the uncomfort.
You may have heard the saying ,"No pain, No gain"
Each time you have a negative emotion, it may be painful but accept it. Youre battling it; youre absorbing it. Youre gaining ground each time you do this and by the time you face more of them. Youll be indifferent.
The real question isnt how to get rid of negative feelings? People who try to "get rid of it" are taking the wrong first step and will have a hard time doing so because youre in constant battle with something thats naturally a part of you.
Emotions are not something where you can just "remove" or "erase" as youre not getting rid of anything. Youre absorbing something and putting it for better use later on.
And the key to doing this first understand it and accept it. Allow it to be there. Or put it how youd liked to put it: just let it be.
By doing this, youll be able to conquer your negative feelings, move forward, and be prepared when the next one comes up.
