Monday, May 5, 2014
Health care practitioners usually recommend their patients to keep a check glucose levels regularly. In fact, this is an obligatory routine diabetics must maintain at any cost. Doctors prepare a schedule for patients wherein they mention perfect diet, exercise regimen, and treatment to help maintain a healthy body. The schedule is based on glucose readings. This means that the patient needs to be comfortable with the idea of self testing glucose levels in the body. Blood Test for Sugar is not a difficult process as one can do it within the privacy of home in no time! Using Glucometer will help.
What’s the Process?
Prepare the Lancet
First and foremost, you must prepare the lancet device. The device will prick your skin. So you need to insert a lancet into the device and then push down until you hear a click.
The Steps Involved
Step 1
As soon as you hear a click, twist the top off the lancet to make the needle visible. Make sure you maintain a distance from lancet button to avoid accidental pushing.
Step 2
The glucose strips box will have a unique code. Take a strip out of the container and close it back immediately to avoid ruining other strips.
Step 3
You must push the glucose strip into the glucometer to get a pre-coded data. Proceed to the next step of you get info similar to that of the box code. In case, there’s a difference, you must change it through pushing the button on the left side.
Step 4
Choose the pressure setting on the lancet glucometer. This is actually pressure you per to prick your skin. The normal range is from 1 to 5. Very low setting will not give results whereas too high will hurt. So you need to determine the setting that works best for you while undertaking a Diabetes Test.
Step 5
Select the area you wish to prick for diabetes test. Pull down the glucometer lancet and slide on the area.
Step 6
Take the glucometer to blood source and hold it against the glucose strip. Allow the strip to absorb blood. You will soon see a symbol being displayed in the glucometer window. This is to indicate whether or not it has adequate blood to process. The glucose level will soon be displayed on the window.

10 Steps to a Saner Thriftier Somewhat Healthier Thanksgiving
Wednesday, April 23, 2014
Are you tired of Thanksgivings when your entire family comes to visit, but you don’t have time to talk to any of them? Do you dream of serving fresh, home-prepared food instead of Stove Top and Potato Buds on Turkey Day? Come this holiday, do you wanna save a coupla bucks?
Sweet. We gotcha covered.
By following these steps and devoting an hour or two to planning ahead, you can cook up a wholesome, economically sound Thanksgiving feast without going completely insane. You’ll have time to actually interact with your loved ones, and no one will leave the house hungry.
Of course, if you’re not up for these strategies (and yo, it’s understood), A) do whatever works for you, or B) try a potluck. Roast some poultry and have each guest bring a side, a dessert, or some booze. No muss, no fuss, and no one can blame you if the green bean casserole came out a little weird this year.
In the meantime, behold! And if you have anything to add, fire away in the comment section.
Step #1: Start shopping now.
Supermarkets begin offering Thanksgiving bargains weeks before the actual holiday. So, if you know you need an item – say, unsalted butter or canned sweet potatoes – buy them on sale a.s.a.p. You’ll save cash AND get to check something off your list.
NOTE: Obviously, this doesn’t apply to perishable goods. If you know you’re making applesauce, wait until the week-of to pick up the fruit. Otherwise, Rot City.
Step #2: Get a headcount.
Is it just the immediate fam this year, or are your 16 second cousins from South Carolina stopping by for some big, juicy bird? Having an approximate attendance will help you plan and budget accordingly.
Step #3: Prep your recipes.
Once you have a headcount, research and start amassing the appropriate recipes based on number of attendees, dietary restrictions, taste perences, and budget. (It’s easier than it sounds, since Thanksgiving tends to focus on a few traditional dishes.) Cut and paste them into a Word Document, so they’re easily searchable and erenced. My favorites include:
Ask guests to bring wine and desserts. Of course, you can prep a pie or two the night before, but letting family pitch in will A) make them feel validated/as if they contributed, B) ease your stress level, and C) save you a buck or two.
Step #4: Create a grocery list.
Now that you have all the recipes, make a big ol’ grocery list of their ingredients. (This is super easy if you’ve already compiled the recipes in a Word Document.)
Helpful hint: If two dishes call for the same ingredient, combine the quantities so you don’t overbuy. For example, if your mashed potatoes need 4 tablespoons of butter, and your stuffing needs 6 tablespoons of butter, combine them into a single line, reading “10 tablespoons of butter.” Shopping will be way less complicated.
Step #5: Check off what you already have.
Odds are, a few list items are already floating around your pantry. Olive oil? Check. Salt? Check. Sixteen-pound game bird? Che- … oh, wait.
Step #6: Spread the remaining shopping out over the next few weeks.
To reiterate, supermarkets tend to spread sales out in the days leading up to Thanksgiving. Buy a little of your list each week, during your regular grocery shopping, using online circulars to check for deals. You’ll have to make a final trip, of course, but you’ll have already banked a bunch of money, and reduced your list by leaps and bounds.
Step #7: Create a schedule.
Okay. This one is where it gets a little nuts, but trust me – creating a schedule really, really helps. Why? It does four things:
This is tough to explain, so here’s mine from last year. (Click to enlarge.)
I usually stick my schedule to the fridge, along with the recipes I’m making that day. This way, it’s convenient, accessible, and I won’t spill gravy on it.
Step #8: Enlist a Sous Chef, a Dish Doer, and a Table Setter.
Unless you’re Ina Garten, Superman, or SuperInaGartenMan (whom, I assure you, exists), you’re gonna need some help in the kitchen. Your Sous Chef can take care of potato mashing while you’re making the gravy. The Dish Doer will wash kitchen gear throughout the day, guaranteeing the appropriate equipment (whisk, measuring cup, etc.) is always clean. And heck, you know all about the Table Setter.
Fun fact: One person can cover the three jobs, if he/she is particularly talented. Last year, my sister’s boyfriend basically made Thanksgiving possible.
Step #9: Do as much as you can the night before.
The Night Before Thanksgiving 2009, my schedule read like this:
Step #10: Stick to the gameplan.
Adhere to the schedule, and Thanksgiving Day will be a walk in the turkey park. (Yes, the turkey park.) Youll not only have plenty of quality time with family and friends, but theyll applaud your efforts for decades to come.
BONUS Step #11: Start drinking, but wait until AFTER you’re finished chopping.
Don’t ask me how I know this.
Readers, what think you? Does this seem crazy, or does a little time invested up front seem like a good trade-off for the day-of? What would you add or take away? The comment section, she is open.

- Coordinates the stovetop and oven. If you’ve ever tried to cram stuffing, turkey, and sweet potatoes into the oven simultaneously, only to have nothing cook all the way through, you know what I’m talking about.
- Ensures you remember everything. Have you ever blanked on the biscuits? Forgotten the beans in the fridge? This visual cue will stop it from happening.
- Gets all the food to the table at the same time. Never again will your turkey be ready two hours after the mashed potatoes.

Steps to Permanent Weight Loss
Saturday, April 5, 2014
(Article first published as Essential Weight Loss Steps on Technorati.)
A new report from the Trust for America’s Health makes it painfully clear that the obesity epidemic is worsening, threatening the lives of millions. The problem is the result of too much junk food and fast food consumed in excessive quantities and at the wrong time of day. Compounding the problem is the lack of regular physical activity to spur the fat burning cycle.
Our body has evolved over countless generations to run efficiently on the type of diet and eating patterns as our caveman ancestors. Specific hormones in the body known as ghrelin and leptin control our appetite, and how and where fat is stored and burned.
For most people, the perfect hormonal balance has been disrupted, resulting in the obesity problem we face today. To achieve permanent weight loss, it’s necessary to follow a plan which restores natural hormonal balance, and proper fat metabolism.
The American Heart Association has declared that our nation is on a sugar binge, and is the main reason that one-third of adults now fall into the obese category. Sugar, and it’s derivative cousin, ined carbs (breads, pasta, pastries and most snack foods), cause blood sugar levels to spike quickly and then drop.
This rapid surge cycle is not normal, and ultimately leads to metabolic disorders such as diabetes and high triglycerides (fats) in the blood. The body is unable to clear excessive amounts from the blood before the next meal, and stores the excess as fat. Eliminating sugar-laden foods and wheat products from your diet will have an immediate effect, allowing the body to release stored fat as metabolism returns to normal.
Successful weight loss begins with a good breakfast. As the name implies, it’s important to properly break the evening’s fast, and this is done with a good source of protein. Avoid the donuts, breads and cereals, as these will convert to sugar quickly and you’ll want to snack before lunch.
Fats and especially protein are difficult for the body to metabolize, so they’re the perfect food to rev up your diet for the day. Skipping breakfast to save the calories always backfires, as you’ll eat much more later in the day to compensate.
Follow these steps and eat from a wide variety of healthy food groups to achieve weight loss success. Add in a regular, moderate exercise program to sustain the fat burning mechanism and you’ll be in sync with your genetically evolved hormones. It’s possible to regain our health and reverse the current obesity epidemic by resolving our addiction to junk foods and developing improved lifestyle habits.

For most people, the perfect hormonal balance has been disrupted, resulting in the obesity problem we face today. To achieve permanent weight loss, it’s necessary to follow a plan which restores natural hormonal balance, and proper fat metabolism.
Step 1: Cut Portion Size at Each Meal
We’ve heard it all before, but the fact is most people eat nearly twice the number of calories they require each day. Americans are addicted to foods which have been scientifically modified in a lab to appeal directly to our sense of taste, forcing the consumption of more calories than we can accommodate at a given meal. Eat three well balanced meals a day, and limit the portion size. Unless you are an extremely active man, limit each meal to no more than 600 calories; women should target 400 to 500 calories, depending on daily activity level.Step 2: Cut the Sugar and Refined Carbs

Step 3: Stop Eating After Dinner
The body is a very efficient, well coordinated machine, completing certain required functions at different times of the day. Sleep allows the body to perform many maintenance duties at the cellular level, and 7 to 9 hours each night are essential to reduce our risk of serious disease. Digestion is a very complex process which must be completed well before retiring, or the necessary sleep routine cycle will be disturbed. Be sure to allow at least 3 hours between your last meal and going to bed. Your body will be properly prepared for the repair tasks at hand, and you’ll get a more reshed night’s rest.Step 4: Never Miss Breakfast

Fats and especially protein are difficult for the body to metabolize, so they’re the perfect food to rev up your diet for the day. Skipping breakfast to save the calories always backfires, as you’ll eat much more later in the day to compensate.

The Remarkable Consensus Over the Next Steps for Health Reform Including the Role of Population Health Management
Friday, March 28, 2014
| Lets fix it! |
Their important insight is that the Bipartisan Policy Center, Brookings Institution, Commonwealth Fund, Kaiser Family Foundation, the National Coalition on Health Care, Partnership for Sustainable Health Care and Urban Institute all have a remarkable degree of overlap in their recommendations for the next phases of health orm.
Most of these expert organizations agree on the merits of value-based payment as well as insurance orm (pay for quality), information technology, competition, tort orm, evidence-based benefit design (paying when theres evidence that it works), workforce changes (greater efficiency), orming Medicare, changing tax policy (the exemption for health insurance) and instituting regional or local caps (stick to a budget or theres consequences).
The DMCB wholeheartedly agrees and hopes that the bipartisan consensus evident among these think-tank institutions leads Congress (if not this one, the next) and the President (if not this one....) to use these ingredients to build on the successes and correct the many deficiencies of the Affordable Care Act.
And the lapse?
Jack Lewin et al were missing one thing. The DMCB looked in each of these organizations web sites and found that there was also considerable support for population health management.
To wit:
The Bipartisan Policy Center - while the emphasis of this report is on health information technology, the real dividends are pretty clear when it mentions "population health" 14 times:
This plan should address the development and adoption of policies and standards needed for the delivery of care, the empowerment of individuals, and improvements in population health based on national health and health care priorities.
The Commonwealth Fund:
Effective population health management requires fundamental change in care delivery that must be supported by changes in payment.
National Coalition
Real orm means engaging consumers in their own health and health care choices. In both Medicare and too many private plans today, benefit design neither supports self-management of chronic disease nor distinguishes between care that is effective and care that is not.
Partnership for Sustainable Health Care - see page 22:
Federal nurse education funding should be ocused to equip registered nurses to assume the roles of case manager and population health coordinator.
The Urban Institute - see page 17 on the topic of Medicaid orm:
States can start in select geographic areas or specific population groups (adults and children or specific chronic conditions), and then incrementally expand them after learning from experience and making program improvements and adjustments. Broader efforts typically mean additional stakeholders, increased collaboration and communication.

Daily steps add up for midlife womens health
Friday, January 24, 2014
Moving 6,000 or more steps a day—no matter how—adds up to a healthier life for midlife women. That level of physical activity decreases the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome (a diabetes precursor and a risk for cardiovascular disease), showed a study published online this month in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society.
Although other studies have shown the value of structured exercise in lowering health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, this study has shown that habitual physical activity—whether it comes from exercising or just activities of daily living—has the power to improve womens health.
In Passo Fundo, Brazil, 292 women who were 45 to 72 years old wore pedometers and recorded their daily steps. They also had health checks such as cholesterol and blood sugar and waist and hip measurement (to gauge abdominal obesity, which is a risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease). Women who took 6,000 or more steps per day were considered active and those who took fewer inactive.
The active women were much less likely than the inactive ones to be obese and have metabolic syndrome or frank diabetes, whether or not they had gone through menopause–when these risks usually go up–and whether or not they were using hormone therapy.
For midlife women, it looks like the journey to health begins with 6,000 steps!

Regular exercise may be one of the keys to happiness, It stimulates brain chemical dopamine which induce relaxation and happiness. Dopamine is neurotransmitter that’s necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness. And the bad thing about it is that, the amount ot this chemical decrease as you age. Scientists believe that nothing is better than exercising to increase your brain’s dopamine production.

So next time you feel stressed, blow of the steam with exercise and feel healthy happy and relaxed. Exercise essentially burns away the chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine that cause stress. At the same time, vigorous exercise releases endorphins into the system. Endorphins are the body’s natural feel good chemicals, and when they are released through exercise, your mood is boosted naturally.

5 Steps to Prevent Diabetes Naturally
Sunday, January 19, 2014
(Article first published as Five Steps to Prevent Diabetes Naturally on Technorati.)
Type 2 diabetes continues to reach epidemic levels in America, doubling the risk of stroke and sudden death from a heart attack. This insidious disease attacks the body’s vascular system, causing metabolic imbalances which reduce quality of life and increase mortality from all causes.
New cases of diabetes are skyrocketing with diagnosis in children becoming all too common, predisposing them to a lifetime of suffering and a shortened lifespan. For the vast majority of people, Type 2 diabetes is a problem caused by poor food choices, and is best prevented and treated through a natural multi-step approach to diet and lifestyle.
Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by excessive sugar circulating in the blood. The cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, and sugar uptake becomes inefficient leading to high blood sugar levels especially after eating. Research indicates that it is the surge of blood sugar after each meal which leads to metabolic dysfunction and ultimately to full blown diabetes. Further, the risk of devastating complications associated with diabetes increases as post meal blood sugar levels rise. Keep blood sugar readings 1 hour after eating below 140 mg/dl and 2 hour readings below 120 mg/dl to reduce disease risk.
Regardless of your starting point, losing as little as 7% of your total body weight can have a dramatic effect on the metabolic factors which drive diabetes. Aiming for a sustainable weight is more important than targeting an unrealistically low weight. Losing weight stimulates a cascade of metabolic functions which exert positive control over blood sugar, insulin resistance and blood lipids. Following a healthy diet will cause natural weight loss with little effort.
Studies show that walking the equivalent of 30 minutes a day reduces the risk of diabetes by half. Exercise allows the cells to naturally accept sugar from the blood as it helps to reverse the effects of insulin resistance. Blood sugar levels are kept at lower levels and are much less likely to lead to diabetes or cause damage to the eyes, kidneys and extremities.
For most people, Type 2 diabetes is a direct result of poor food choices. Many resort to prescription medications which are minimally effective in reducing blood sugar and many have been shown to increase heart disease risk. A growing number of people have been able to prevent and treat diabetes through a natural approach to diet, exercise and lifestyle, leading to dramatically improved health and extended lifespan.
Step 1. Monitor Post Meal Blood Sugar Levels

Step 2. Eat Healthy – Eliminate Refined Carbs
Poor diet is the primary cause of Type 2 diabetes. Specifically, it’s the excessive amount of refined carbohydrates most people eat throughout the day. All types of breads, pasta and wheat-based starches begin to break down into sugar in the mouth and cause blood sugar levels to spike dangerously. The sugars in most vegetables are closely bound to fiber, and release very slowly, making leafy greens a natural anti-diabetic food. Other good choices include lean cuts of meat (avoid charring or overcooking), nuts and seeds. Be sure to include a raw fat source with each meal, as this will slow the breakdown of sugars and ensure the fat-soluble nutrients in your food are properly absorbed.Step 3. Lose Weight

Step 4. Begin an Exercise Regimen

Step 5. Targeted Natural Supplementation
There are a handful of natural supplements which are used by the body to assist blood sugar metabolism. Minerals such as zinc, magnesium and chromium are critical to the proper breakdown of carbohydrates and fat, assisting the body to properly respond to the effects of insulin. Vinegar and cinnamon have been shown to assist the breakdown of carbohydrates to sugar, resulting in improved post meal blood sugar response. For most people, Type 2 diabetes is a direct result of poor food choices.
