Zinc is Essential to Improve Brain Communications and Improve Memory

Sunday, May 18, 2014

Zinc is an essential mineral known to improve skin tone, aid wound healing, fight cancer and shorten the length of the common cold. Researchers publishing in the journalNeuron now identify the crucial role this super-nutrient plays in support of memory formation and cognitive stability. Additionally, they have found that zinc may also play a part in controlling the devastating occurrence of epileptic seizures.

For the first time, scientists have been able to watch zinc in action as the nutrient regulates communications between neurons and the hippocampus to improve memory and learning capabilities. Ensuring proper intake of zinc is an important step toward optimal brain function and may prevent cognitive decline as we age.

Zinc Improves Communication between Neurons to Improve Cognition
Researchers at Duke University Medical Center and chemists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology collaborated to study the effects of zincon brain function. Scientists experimenting with mice used a chemical that binds with zinc to eliminate it from the brain of the test animals. They found that in the absence of the mineral, communications between neurons was significantly diminished and that zinc is vital for controlling the efficiency between nerve cells in the hippocampus.

For more than a half century, scientists have understood that high concentrations of zinc are deposited within nerve cells, called vesicles that package the transmitters which enable nerve cells to communicate. The highest concentrations of brain zinc are found among the neurons of the hippocampus that control the high functions of learning and memory.

Researchers Find Zinc Levels in the Brain Control Memory and Learning Functions
By artificially regulating the level of zinc in the brain of the test animals, researchers were able to confirm that eliminating zinc from the neural vesicles also prevented enhanced communication. By increasing levels of the mineral, they were able to significantly restore enhanced communications in the hippocampal region to improve learning and memory capabilities.

The results of this studyconducted using mice can be extrapolated to humans because zinc is known to play a similar role in the brain of both species. Zinc deficiency in the typical western diet is rapidly becoming a serious problem that threatens human health. Due to poor farming practices and the abundance of nutrient-deprived processed foods, many children and adults suffer from a chronic insufficiency of the mineral.

Over time, lack of zinc from dietarysources can result in immune system depression, decline in sexual health and increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Ideal dietary sources of zinc include liver, beef and lamb. Vegetarians can include nuts, seeds and peas to obtain the micronutrient. Alternatively, zinc supplements are available (30 to 50 mg per day) to help maintain healthy systemic levels that improve memory, learning and cognition.

3 Ways to easily sharpen brain function

Thursday, May 15, 2014

3 Ways to easily sharpen brain function - The brain is one of the vital organs in the body. Without a healthy brain, then we can not do the activity properly. Its important to maintain brain health every day. Here are three keys that keep the brain healthy, Care2 reported.

1. Nutritious foods and supplements

One of the brain is the biggest enemy of excessive free radicals. To combat that, you have to give him super nutrients from food and supplements rich in antioxidants. Blueberries are a rich source and has been shown to protect neurons from oxidative stress (a condition in which the amount of free radicals in the body exceeds the bodys capacity to neutralize it). Other foods rich in antioxidants is nuts, berries, salmon and spices.

For a supplement, you can regularly take vitamin E because it is associated with cognitive health. Additionally select supplements containing curcumin because the active ingredient in it can prevent Alzheimers disease.

2. Sport

Several studies have shown a close relationship between exercise and improved brain function. The study found women over 65 who walked 30 minutes a day will have a slower cognitive decline. People who regularly exercise can boost brain power. By exercising increases blood flow to the brain so that the adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients.

3. Meditation

Meditation is an activity that calms the mind and body. If you are a regular meditation, a lot of positive changes that you can to the brain. This activity can prevent brain shrinkage, improve brain function, improving relations between nerves, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as sharpen the thinking brain. Meditate on a regular basis. No need for long, just 10 minutes each day.

Follow the three tips above to get strong and healthy brain.

Common Food Supplement Fights Degenerative Brain Disorders

Widely available in pharmacies and health stores, phosphatidylserine is a natural food supplement produced from beef, oysters, and soy. Proven to improve cognition and slow memory loss, its a popular treatment for older people experiencing memory impairment. Now a team headed by Prof. Gil Ast and Dr. Ron Bochner of Tel Aviv Universitys Department of Human Molecular Genetics has discovered that the same supplement improves the functioning of genes involved in degenerative brain disorders, including Parkinsons disease and Familial Dysautonomia (FD).

In FD, a rare genetic disorder that impacts the nervous system and appears almost exclusively in the Ashkenazi Jewish population, a genetic mutation prevents the brain from manufacturing healthy IKAP proteins — which likely have a hand in cell migration and aiding connections between nerves — leading to the early degeneration of neurons. When the supplement was applied to cells taken from FD patients, the gene function improved and an elevation in the level of IKAP protein was observed, reports Prof. Ast. These results were replicated in a second experiment which involved administering the supplement orally to mouse populations with FD.

The findings, which have been published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics, are very encouraging, says Prof. Ast. "That we see such an effect on the brain — the most important organ in relation to this disease — shows that the supplement can pass through the blood-brain barrier even when administered orally, and accumulate in sufficient amounts in the brain."

Slowing the death of nerve cells

Already approved for use as a supplement by the FDA, phosphatidylserine contains a molecule essential for transmitting signals between nerve cells in the brain. Prof. Ast and his fellow researchers decided to test whether the same chemical, which is naturally synthesized in the body and known to boost memory capability, could impact the genetic mutation which leads to FD.

Researchers applied a supplement derived from oysters, provided by the Israeli company Enzymotec, to cells collected from FD patients. Noticing a robust effect on the gene, including a jump in the production of healthy IKAP proteins, they then tested the same supplement on mouse models of FD, engineered with the same genetic mutation that causes the disease in humans.

The mice received the supplement orally, every two days for a period of three months. Researchers then conducted extensive genetic testing to assess the results of the treatment. "We found a significant increase of the protein in all the tissues of the body," reports Prof. Ast, including an eight-fold increase in the liver and 1.5-fold increase in the brain. "While the food supplement does not manufacture new nerve cells, it probably delays the death of existing ones," he adds.

Therapeutic potential for Parkinsons

That the supplement is able to improve conditions in the brain, even when given orally, is a significant finding, notes Prof. Ast. Most medications enter the body through the blood stream, but are incapable of breaking through the barrier between the blood and the brain.

In addition, the researchers say the supplements positive effects extend beyond the production of IKAP. Not only did phosphatidylserine impact the gene associated with FD, but it also altered the level of a total of 2400 other genes — hundreds of which have been connected to Parkinsons disease in previous studies.

The researchers believe that the supplement may have a beneficial impact on a number of degenerative diseases of the brain, concludes Prof. Ast, including a major potential for the development of new medications which would help tens of millions of people worldwide suffering from these devastating diseases.

Top Super Brain Foods For Kids

Friday, May 9, 2014

We all know that we need to eat the right diet for the good of our physical health. As a student of self development and a pursuer of knowledge, the study of the human brain is a fascinating area for you to focus on. Studies prove time and time again that there is a great positive correlation with the types of foods children eat and their mood, attention spans, behavior, and test scores.

Children in their growing years need proper food for their overall growth as well as for their brain development. The foods consumed by children affect their learning skills and improves their ability to concentrate. Studies have found that food containing essential nutrients and vitamins has the ability to boost the brain power. Below are top super "brain foods" that may help boost a childs brain development and growth.

1. Eggs
Eggs offer protein, and theyre one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. Eating protein at breakfast helps kids feel satisfied longer (no mid-morning hunger). Eggs contain protein and nutrients like omega -3 fatty acid, choline, Zinc and lutein.

These nutrients are necessary for brain development and function. Choline present in egg is vital for the formation of memory stem cells. The more the stem cells, the better will be the memory power. Choline rich foods promote memory cell production throughout the childhood.

How To Serve?
• It can be served as boiled eggs or omelets or as scrambled eggs.
• If your child hates eggs disguise them in toast with whole grain breads.
• You can use scrambled eggs to fill in tortillas as a snack.

 2. Berries
Berries like blueberries and strawberries are high in antioxidants. These antioxidants are expected to improve the cognitive skills in humans. This food will improve the memory power and the vitamin C present in the berries will improve the immune system as well. The antioxidants prevent the oxidative stress on brain function.

How To Serve?
  • Apply penut butter on bread slices and keep sliced berries in between to make a brain power house.
  • Add different types of berries to the cereals or oatmeal
  • You can add them in fruit salads or other desserts
3. Oatmeal
Research shows that kids who eat oatmeal are better able to concentrate and pay attention in school. Fiber-rich whole grains, like oatmeal, digest slowly, providing kids with a steady stream of energy. Oatmeal is rich in fiber and protein and helps to keep the arteries of the brain and heart clear.

It has been found that children who eat oatmeal were better at memory tasks and map skills. Oatmeal digests slowly and provides the kids with a steady supply of energy for a long time.

How To Serve?

  • Add raisins, dried apricot or walnuts to the cooked oatmeal to make it more appealing.
  • Serve your kids oatmeal topped with sliced fruit for a well-rounded and healthy breakfast.
  • Do not add sugar; instead use honey or maple syrup to sweeten the oatmeal.
4. Nuts
Nuts and nut butter have long been known for their protein, but they also provide essential nutrients for the brain. Researchers have linked tree nuts to a decreased risk of many diseases. Now there’s evidence that they also improve cognition.

Most of the nuts have high concentrations of vitamin E, B vitamins, antioxidants, magnesium, minerals and Omega-3s. All support the nervous system. The walnut’s shape resembles a brain, so why shouldnt it be a brain food? Almonds may help save your memory. As these are filled with vitamin E. Vitamin E has been linked to improved brain performance.

How To Serve?
  • Explore different types of nut butters and pair them with sliced fruit or whole grain bread, or blend them into a smoothie.
  • Make a paste and apply on toast.
  • put a teaspoon of powdered nuts in a glass of milk.
  • Make a sandwich by applying almond butter on wholegrain breads and keep some sliced apple in between.
5) Whole Grains
They are a rich source of complex carbohydrates and hence helps to maintain an even glucose level in the blood throughout the day. The brain needs a constant source of fuel, in the form of glucose, to properly function. Grains are a source of glucose and whole grains provide fiber, which helps to slow down the release of glucose into the body. As a result, the brain receives a steady supply of fuel for a longer period of time. Whole grain breads, pastas and cereals are good sources.

How To Serve?

  • You can use whole grain breads for breakfast or for making sandwiches
  • Whole grain cookies can be used as snacks.
  • Research has shown that kids who eat a proper whole grain breakfast do better in their academics and has less behavioral problems.
6. Fish
Fish provide a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for brain health. According to an article in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," omega-3s account for 40 percent of the fatty acids in brain membranes and have a significant effect on cognitive function and growth. The most abundant sources of omega-3 fatty acids are fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel. In addition to following a balanced diet, consuming these foods at least twice a week will provide adequate amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.

How To Serve?
  • Make the fish child-friendly by creating tuna or salmon salad sandwiches using fat-free mayonnaise, cranberries and diced walnuts. Serve it on whole wheat bread or crackers.
  • It is better to avoid deep fried fish as this will remove the nutrients, serve them grilled or roasted
  • If your child is reluctant to eat fish, try fish oil supplements
7) Dark Leafy Greens
Greens, such as spinach and kale, pack an immune boosting punch with their vitamin A and C. The vitamin B-12 and folate in spinach improves brain health and the maintenance of cognitive functioning, including memory. Kale is rich in manganese, a trace mineral that helps synthesize fatty acids critical to healthy brain function.

How to serve?
  • Try Kale chips, and spinach brownies to give kids a nutrient boost in foods they like!
  • Use them in salads or sprinkle finely cut on an omelet or use them smoothies.
8) Beans
Beans are an affordable and delicious source of protein and complex carbohydrates. This combination helps provide the brain with a steady source of fuel and vital nutrients. Beans contain vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids and tryptophan, which can influence and preserve brain function.

How to serve

  • Try adding beans to a wrap, soup, pasta sauce or chili. Bean dips are a great way to spice up raw veggies for an after school snack.

  • Puree chickpeas, lentils or white kidney beans with some garlic, lemon and extra virgin olive oil for a brain healthy dip for snacks.
9) Milk
Protein and calcium in dairy products provide fuel for the brain and body. Protein helps build brain tissue, while milks calcium keeps kids bones and teeth strong. Milk is a well known source of protein, vitamin D, and phosphorus. But calcium also affects how our bodies regulate energy, Calcium plays an important role in the bodys production of insulin, Unless there is true lactose intolerance, it should be a nonnegotiable part of your childs diet. Bonus: A diet rich in low-fat dairy seems to protect children from obesity.

How to serve?
  • Turn up the appeal To make milk tempting, just add chocolate or strawberry syrup.
10) Tomatoes
Theyre loaded with lycopene -- a substance that protects against many cancers. Cooking tomatoes makes them even healthier because the heat releases the lycopene. Pairing tomato containing foods with a good fat, like olive oil, helps the body absorb more.

How to serve?
  • Use in pizza and pasta sauces are obvious choices.
  • Add tomato sauce to turkey meatballs or meatloaf if you need to disguise it. A bowl of chili and salsa for dipping are good options if youve got a spice lover.
11. Yoghurt
Yoghurt is a good source of protein, healthy fat and vitamin B. It contains healthy bacteria known to boost immunity and aid digestion. The fat present in yoghurt is very necessary for brain health. This fat keeps the brain cell membranes flexible and helps in sending and receiving information by the brain cells.

How To Serve?

  • You can use flavored yoghurts as desserts
  • Add a drizzle of honey (after age 1) for sweetness, a bit of maple syrup, or try a squeeze of agave syrup .
  • You can serve yoghurt with berries on top for breakfast.

12) Dark chocolate
If given in moderation, dark chocolate can promote brain health. Dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than blueberries and natural cocoa rates higher than raspberries and blackberries for these key nutrients. The antioxidants in chocolate protect brain cells from damaging free radicals and improve cognitive function.
Choose dark chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa, which typically means a lower amount of sugar.

How to serve?
  • Pair a small serving of dark chocolate with fruit for a healthy afternoon snack.
  • pair with milk or yoghurt
13) Avocados
Avocado is loaded with healthy fats and a good dose of vitamin E. The consistency of this fruit is also great for babies beginning to eat solids and can be mixed with milk too.

How to serve?
  • Serve as mashed food that will enhance your baby’s health,
  • Mix wit milk or smoothie
14) Water
Water is a highly overlooked food for children. School going children drink very little water and this can affect the proper brain function. When the children get dehydrated after playing they will be irritable and lethargic and will not be in a frame of mind to listen or memorize.

How To Serve?

  • Offer water along with every meal
  • Make sure that they have access to good drinking water when they are in school.

15) Cereals
Even if your child had a bowl for breakfast, fortified whole grain cereals are a snack thats rich in folate, complex carbs, and easy-to-access protein. Fortified cereals are also a great source of vitamin B12, linked to how well we remember things, reports the National Institutes of Health.

How To Serve?

  • Instead of serving it plain, try mixing some whole grain cereal with raisins and peanuts to improve the nutrient value.
  • Avoid cereals with added sugar
Besides these brainy foods there a lot to choose from. Choosing the right foods for children not only improves their health today, but also lays a solid nutritional foundation for the future. Prevent aging brain with these two foods

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Prevent aging brain with these two foods - In addition to training the brain by playing Sudoku or crossword puzzles, you should meet in order to prevent brain aging nutrients by eating a strawberry and blueberry.

Because a study says that two berries are rich in polyphenols are effective in preventing premature aging of the brain.

Researchers from Tufts University and the University of Maryland Baltimore County precise analysis on the impact of berries on the brain of rat. They were trying to figure out what berry fruit really can cleanse the accumulated toxins in the brain.

Researchers then feed the berry to mice for two months while monitoring the condition of his brain. The result, proved that strawberry and blueberry is a powerful way to protect the brain from aging due to polyphenol content in it.

"Most brain diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons are caused by high toxic form of the protein in the brain. So by eating blueberries and strawberries, the risk of developing the disease can be reduced," said researcher Dr. Shibu Poulose, as quoted by The Daily News.

In a different study last year, U.S. researchers also proved that both these berries can slow cognitive decline in elderly women brain.

Exercise boosts brain health

Thursday, April 24, 2014

Research has shown that exercise is good for the brain. Now investigators have identified a molecule called irisin that is produced in the brain during endurance exercise and has neuroprotective effects. Researchers were able to artificially increase the levels of irisin in the blood to activate genes involved in learning and memory. The findings, published online October 10 in the Cell Press journal Cell Metabolism, may be useful for designing drugs that utilize this exercise-induced molecule to guard against neurodegenerative diseases and improve cognition in the aging population.

While its known that exercise can boost cognitive function and lessen symptoms of neurological diseases like depression, stroke, and Alzheimers disease, the mechanisms underlying these effects are unclear. One important player is thought to be a growth factor named brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

Through experiments conducted in mice, investigators led by Dr. Bruce Spiegelman of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School found that a molecule called FNDC5 and its cleavage product, irisin, are elevated by endurance exercise in the brain and increase BDNF expression. On the other hand, mice genetically altered to have low irisin levels in the brain had reduced levels of BDNF.

The team also found that raising levels of irisin in the circulation caused the molecule to cross the blood brain barrier, where it increased expression of BDNF and activated genes involved in cognition.

"Our results indicate that FNDC5/irisin has the ability control a very important neuroprotective pathway in the brain," says Dr. Spiegelman. The researchers next plan to work on developing a stable form of the irisin protein that can be given to mice by injection and may augment the brains natural anti-degeneration pathways.

Beware anemia may increase the risk of brain disease!

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

Beware, anemia may increase the risk of brain disease! - Seniors who experience symptoms of anemia or anemia are known to have higher risk of developing dementia, according to new research. Dementia is a brain disorder that makes sufferers experiencing functional decline and memory.

"We found an increased risk of dementia by 60 percent in the elderly with anemia. Upon calculating other factors such as demographics, other diseases, and so on, the risk still remains high at 40-50 percent," said lead researcher Dr. Kristine Yaffe, of the University of California, as reported by U.S. News.

Given the number of adults and seniors who have anemia, Yaffe suggested that more vigilant about the possibility of dementia in the elderly. Even so, a study conducted on 2,500 women and men aged 70 years showed no evidence that anemia causes dementia.

Yaffe explained that more research needs to be done to determine whether anemia and dementia have a causal relationship. Logically, the red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. People who are anemic deficiency of red blood cells, so lack of oxygen flow to the brain. This could be related to the emergence of dementia.

Anemia can also be an indication of poor overall health. Cause of anemia is iron deficiency and red blood cells. Diseases such as cancer, renal, or other chronic diseases can cause anemia.

Chronic Stress Promotes Protein Brain Tangles and Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by an initial loss of short term memory and the ability to form rational and permanent thoughts. Protein tangles known as tau aggregates strangle neural synapses, blocking the vital flow of neurotransmitter and electrical signals necessary to form memories and personality. Once considered a disease of the aging, this form of dementia is increasing at a startling rate in younger individuals, largely due to a processed and ined food diet, environmental factors and long-term chronic stress.
Researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have published the result of a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, explaining the mechanism behind continual exposure to stressors so common in our rapid-paced lifestyle, and the unnatural accumulation of insoluble tau protein aggregates in brain tissue. They explain that neurofibrillary tangles are one of the physical hallmark signs of Alzheimer’s disease, and have been shown to contribute to disease progression in people under chronic stress conditions during the course of past studies.
Chronic Stress is Positively Linked to Physical Brain Changes Leading to Alzheimer’s Dementia
The study team, using a mouse-based model, noted “
we found that repeated episodes of emotional stress, which has been demonstrated to be comparable to what humans might experience in ordinary life, resulted in the phosphorylation and altered solubility of tau proteins in neurons… these events are critical in the development of NFT pathology in Alzheimers disease.” Researchers determined that the effect was most pronounced in the hippocampus of the brain, an area linked to the formation, organization and storage of memories.
The scientists are quick to note that the type of stress that is associated with the development of tangles in the brain is not acute stress, defined as a single, passing episode. They determined that chronic, long term stress that never ceases is far more threatening to the brain and promotes tau protein aggregates to accumulate. Acute stress is actually considered useful for brain plasticity and helps to facilitate learning.
Engage in Stress Reduction Techniques to Reduce Stress and Disease Risk
Chronic stress continually stimulates and activates stress pathways in the brain that lead to pathological alteration of stress circuitry in the brain. The researchers describe chronic stress as too much of a good thing gone bad. Lead study author, Dr. Robert Rissman
commented on their findings “As people age, perhaps their neuronal circuits do too, becoming less robust and perhaps less capable of completely rebounding from the effects of stress.”
Certainly we cannot entirely eliminate stress from our daily lives, and the results of this study conclude that small amounts of acute stress are important to maintain brain plasticity and for the formation of new memories. The problem arises when the level of stress never abates, and our brain is unable to recover from the massive amount of new stimuli we experience from chronic stress. Reduce your stress level to a minimum, as this will provide yet another crucial lifestyle modification that can help prevent chronic illness and ward off Alzheimer’s disease.

Exercise may trump mental activity in protecting against brain shrinkage

Exercising regularly in old age may better protect against brain shrinkage than engaging in mental or social activities, according to a new study published in the October 23, 2012, print issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Research suggests that brain shrinkage may lead to problems with memory and thinking.

"People in their seventies who participated in more physical exercise, including walking several times a week, had less brain shrinkage and other signs of aging in the brain than those who were less physically active," said study author Alan J. Gow, PhD, with the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. "On the other hand, our study showed no real benefit to participating in mentally and socially stimulating activities on brain size, as seen on MRI scans, over the three-year time frame."

Researchers looked at medical records of 638 people from Scotland born in 1936. The participants were given MRI scans at 73 years old.

The group gave details about their exercise habits, ranging from moving only in connection with necessary household chores to keeping fit with heavy exercise or participating in competitive sports several times per week. They also reported their participation in social and mentally stimulating activities.

The study found that after three years, people who participated in more physical activity experienced less brain shrinkage than those who exercised minimally.

"Our results show that regularly exercising in old age is potentially important to protecting the brain as we age," said Gow.

Milk Thistle Boosts Liver Function and Slows Brain Aging

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

(Article first published as Milk Thistle Protects Your Liver and Can Slow Signs of Brain Aging on Technorati.)
The liver and brain are two metabolically active organs that are under constant attack from disease promoting free radicals. Elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels combined with blood glucose abnormalities and obesity cause damage to the cellular matrix of the liver and brain that worsen with time.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects an estimated 20 to 40% of adults in western society and dementia can touch nearly half of those reaching their 85th birthday. Silymarin is the active compound found naturally in milk thistle that is shown to provide a significant degree of protection against NAFLD and abnormal brain aging.

Silymarin Shown to Prevent and Reverse Liver Damage
The liver is called upon to perform more than 300 critical metabolic functions within our body. One of those functions is the formation of cholesterol and essential lipids that are required for cellular synthesis and repair. A diet high in processed carbohydrates and synthetic hydrogenated fats can result in excess blood triglycerides that become lodged in the hepatic cells and NAFLD can develop.

NAFLD is a chronic disease that is characterized by inflammation of the organ that releases a flurry of free radicals and liver enzymes. Left unchecked, NAFLD can progress to cirrhosis, carcinoma and death. The result of research published in the journal Hepatitis Monthly demonstrates the effectiveness of treatment with silymarin for the treatment of NAFLD. Researchers noted a significant decline in liver enzyme markers that indicate reversal of the disease, and no serious side effects were reported as a result of the natural treatment.

Silymarin Found to Protect Nerves, Slow Brain Aging Process
Silymarin is one of a small number of compounds able to cross the blood-brain barrier and affect neural function and chemical neurotransmitters. Long known for its ability to detoxify the liver, silymarin also exerts a powerful protective edge against nerve damage and brain preservation.

Information from the journal Neurochemistry International shows that the nutrient is able to protect delicate glial cells in the brain against free radical damage that occurs as a result of low grade bacterial infection common in overweight and obese individuals.

Silymarin Inhibits Plaque Formation, Prevents Alzheimer`s Disease
One of the key indicators of Alzheimer’s disease are the protein amyloid plaques that form and prevent electrical and chemical signaling between neurons. It is known that plaque exists as a normal byproduct of metabolic activity in the brain and is not properly cleared in those exhibiting symptoms of dementia. The result of a study published in the journal Molecular Gerontology demonstrates that silymarin helps the brain to naturally clear amyloid plaque before it becomes tangled and restricts normal cellular communication.

Silymarin from milk thistle is shown to be a powerful nutrient that assists multiple biological pathways in the liver and brain to maintain optimal organ function. Milk thistle is available as an inexpensive nutritional supplement. Nutritional experts recommend 250 to 450 mg per day to provide optimal effectiveness. Take advantage of natural silymarin to boost liver detoxification, prevent NAFLD and prevent the damage from free radicals on the delicate brain matrix.

Omega 3 Fat DHA Boosts Brain Metabolism to Lower Alzheimer’s Disease Risk

Sunday, April 6, 2014

Several recently published articles highlight the critical importance of Omega-3 fats from fatty fish consumption and fish oil supplements. Scientists publishing in the journalStroke demonstrate that the active DHA Omega-3 fat component helps brain cells to better withstand the stress load placed on the aging brain to lower the risk of a life-altering stroke by as much as a quarter.

Researchers from the Rhode Island Hospital`s Alzheimer`s Disease and Memory Disorders Center have found that DHA from supplements alter the critical brain chemistry and structure to prevent cognitive decline and abnormal brain aging. A wealth of scientific evidence is mounting to document the importance of Omega-3 fats to assist metabolic disorders that lead to dementia, stroke and chronic disease.

DHA, Omega-3 Fat Lowers Brain Inflammation to Improve Cognitive Function
Inflammation of the vital nerves and critical structures of the brain is a precursor to stress that can play an important role in the development of a life-altering stroke. Researchers publish the result of their work designed to determine if Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, specifically the long-chain DHAcomponent would be sufficient to reduce neural inflammation and lower risk from a stroke.

To conduct the study, mice were broken into three groups. The first group was supplemented with a DHA-enriched diet, the second group consumed a DHA-depleted diet and the final mice were fed a control diet. After a period of three months, scientists found that only the group with the DHA-enriched diet experienced lower levels of neuroinflammation and had 25% less tissue injury following an induced stroke. They also noted that long-term supplementation resulted in a healthy buildup of DHA fat in brain tissue resulting in an enhanced Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acid ratio.

Consumption of Omega-3 Fats Protects the Brain to Lower Damage from a Stroke
Lead author on the study, Dr. Jasna Kriz concluded“This is the first convincing demonstration of the powerful anti-inflammatory effect of DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential Omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. The consumption of omega-3s creates an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective environment in the brain that mitigates damage following a stroke.”

Additional evidence of the importance of Omega-3 fats from fish consumption or supplementation is provided by researchers from Rhode Island Hospital. A study was designed using 819 senior participants broken into three groups, those with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer`s Disease. 117 individuals were taking fish oil supplements during the three year course of the study. Taking fish oil supplements was associated with less brain shrinkage and improved cognitive function during the study period.

The lead author, Dr. Lori Daiello concludes, “In the imaging analyses for the entire study population, we found a significant positive association between fish oil supplement use and average brain volumes in two critical areas utilized in memory and thinking.” DHA is perentially conserved for the construction of neural structures and should be an essential part of your regular menu (from fatty fish) or as a molecularly distilled and purified supplement (500 mg to 1 gram per day) to lower stroke risk and prevent cognitive decline.

Mediterranean Diet and Calorie Restriction Promote Brain Health and Longevity

Saturday, April 5, 2014

Researchers have long theorized that a Mediterranean diet full of vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, seeds and olive oil can help promote good health. Scientists at the Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden reporting in the European journal AGE provides the unanimous results of four independent studies that demonstrate this style of eating not only lowers the risk from many chronic and potentially fatal diseases, but actually extends healthy lifespan in aging adults.

A separate research body appearingin the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) explains that calorie restriction or consuming about twenty-five percent fewer calories each day, turns on a molecule that helps the brain stay young. Extrapolating the results of both studies suggests that following a Mediterranean diet with fewer calories may provide a valuable key to preserving memory, lowering risk of serious illness and extending a healthy life span.

Mediterranean Diet Improves Lifespan by Twenty Percent
Swedish researchers studied the effects of a Mediterranean dieton older people in the Swiss population. They developed a unique study designed to compare 70-year-olds who eat a Mediterranean diet with others who have eaten more meat and animal products. The intent was to confirm the positive results suggested by a myriad of studies over the past decade that found a diet low in animal meats and high in fresh vegetables and monounsaturated fats can improve health and extend lifespan.

The result of the study indicated that those who eat a Mediterranean diet have a 20% higher chance of living longer. The study leader, Dr. Gianluca Tognon commented“This means in practice that older people who eat a Mediterranean diet live an estimated two to three years longer than those who dont”. Three additional studies awaiting publication support these results. Dr. Tognon concluded “there is no doubt that a Mediterranean diet is linked to better health, not only for the elderly but also for youngsters.”

Calorie Restricted Diet Slows Brain Aging to Improve Cognition
An independent study found that overeating may cause brain aging while eating less turns on a molecule that helps the brain stay young. Italian researchers demonstrated that a molecule called CREB1 is triggered by a calorie restricted diet and activates many genes linked to longevity and to the proper functioning of the brain. Calorie restriction is defined as eating 25 to 30 percent less than normal while maintaining optimal nutrition.

Researchers conducting the study concluded“This discovery has important implications to develop future dietary therapies to keep our brain young and prevent brain degeneration and the aging process.” Compiling the available scientific evidence shines a critical light on how the type of food we consume (Mediterranean diet) and the quantity (Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition) can help prevent premature brain aging and lower the risk of cognitive decline as we age.

Reduce weight can increase a womans brain power

Wednesday, March 26, 2014

Reduce weight can increase a womans brain power? - Losing weight is not hany good for your health, but also for brain health and memory. A recent study showed that weight loss can help improve memory power and brain activity in women. This is evident in older women who are overweight.

This result was found by researchers at Umea University in Sweden after the use of MRI to monitor the brain activity of 20 elderly women who are overweight. Scientists found that participants memory skills and brain increased after their diet and lose weight for six months.

Previous research has shown that being overweight can also impair memory and brain power weakens. The more fat that is stored around the hips women, the risk of weakening the power of the brain will be even greater.

"Brain activity is higher after participants lose weight, this suggests that the brain became more active in storing new memories," said lead researcher Andreas Pettersson, as reported by the NY Daily News.

After a diet and lose weight to increase brain activity associated with memory storage. Also reduced brain activity in the part related to memory impairment. This indicates the ability of the brain to store memories is more efficient.

Acai and Blueberries Promote Health Protect Against Brain Aging and Heart Disease

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

(Article first published as Acai and the Berry Family Promote Health for the New Year on Technorati.)
Each day our cells are bombarded with negatively charged ions known as free radicals that cause damage leading to accelerated aging and increased risk of heart disease, cancer and dementia. It`s estimated that each of our trillion or so cells is assaulted by up to 10,000 free radicals each day.

This damage must be repaired by our body to prevent disease and slow the aging process. Free radicals are a natural part of metabolism and represent the byproducts of respiration, digestion and physical activity. Fortunately nutritional research has confirmed a host of natural compounds found in berries. Start your New Year off on a healthy note with a bowl full of tasty berries.

The Free Radical Theory of Aging
One well accepted theory of aging explains how free radicals cause cellular degeneration and damage to nuclear DNA. As we age our ability to repair this damage becomes limited due to poor diet and lifestyle choices over the course of decades. Researchers have found that as we age, as many as one in three proteins have become dysfunctional due to free radical damage.
Proteins are the backbone of life and essential to health.

Loss of protein function results in many of the outward signs of aging including wrinkles and grey hair and leads to cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and dementia. Any nutrient that can neutralize free radicals will help to lower risk of disease and extend natural life.

Acai Berry is the Top Ranked Antioxidant Food
Acai berry has been shown to exhibit the highest antioxidant capacity of all natural food sources demonstrating the ability to attract and neutralize free radicals before they can cause cellular damage. Scientists at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center have developed a standardized index known as ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) designed to measure the ability of antioxidants to absorb free radicals. Acai berry has the highest recorded ORAC score of 18,400 providing validation for its ability to provide protection to cellular mitochondria that are most susceptible to free radical damage.

The results of a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry shows that people who supplemented with acai berry increased the antioxidant capacity of their blood threefold. Supplementing with acai provides a significant shield to our genetic foundation as well as the protein structures that we rely on for disease free health and natural aging.

Blueberries Improve Cognitive Health
Blueberries rank in the middle of the ORAC spectrum at 3,200 yet have been shown to enhance cognitive function due to their unique ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Blueberries target the area of the brain associated with learning and memory and protect neurons by absorbing free radicals that limit the activity of neurotransmitters and electrical impulses necessary for optimal brain function.

Bilberries are Good for the Heart
A relative of the blueberry, bilberries have a demonstrated efficacy in lowering risk factors for heart disease. This berry significantly inhibits the angiotensin-converting enzyme that contributes to blood vessel constriction and high blood pressure. A major class of drugs has been developed by Big Pharma to accomplish this same task with many dangerous side effects. Bilberries are powerful antioxidants that naturally lower blood pressure and improve vascular health.

Acai and virtually all members of the berry family are potent antioxidants that promote vibrant health by neutralizing age-inducing free radicals. Health conscious individuals will want to include a variety of different colored berries as part of their diet to reap a multitude of life extending benefits and start the New Year with vibrant health.

Diet and Powerful Nutrients Prevent Brain Shrinkage Lower Alzheimer’s Disease Risk

Monday, March 17, 2014

Researchers reporting in the prestigious journal, Neurology have found that proper diet and specific nutrients can lower the risk of brain shrinkage by nearly forty percent. Other lifestyle factors including degree of education and elevated blood pressure combined with a healthy diet can slash brain shrinkage risk in half. Shrinking brain volume is very closely associated with the development of many forms of dementia including the most devastating affliction, Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to following weight management practices including calorie restriction with optimal nutrition (CRON), middle and advanced aging adults will want to ensure they consume a diet packed with marine derived Omega-3 fats and vitamins B, C, D and E to dramatically lower the risk of reduced brain volume, memory loss and risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Key Vitamins and Marine Derived Fats Slow Brain Shrinkage and Cognitive Decline
Dr. Gene Bowman from the Departments of Neurology and Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University and his team of researchersrecruited 104 elderly people with an average age of 87 who had few risk factors for impaired memory and thinking. They performed blood tests to quantify and compare 30 different nutrient biomarkers considered important to support brain health and volume. All the participants also completed tests of memory and thinking, while 42 of them also underwent MRI scans that measured their brain volume.

An analysis of the results found that the participants ate an otherwise healthy diet, yet 25% were lacking in vitamin D and 7% were deficient in vitamin B12. Dr. Bowman noted that the results showed a significant amount of the variation in brain volume and scores on the thinking and memory tests were tied to levels of nutrient biomarkers.

Nutrient Markers Measured in Blood Impact Brain Health and Memory
Researchers determined the nutrientlevels accounted for 17% of the variation in the scores, while 46% of the variation was tied to other factors such as age, number of years of education and blood pressure. For brain volume, the nutrient levels accounted for 37% of the variation. The study found that the vitamins and nutrients you get from eating a wide range of fruits, vegetables and fish can be measured in blood biomarkers and have a direct impact on brain shrinkage, memory and cognition.

Dr. Bowman concluded “it is very exciting to think that people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet… Im a firm believer these nutrients have strong potential to protect your brain and make it work better.” In addition to eating a natural, organic diet full of fresh vegetables, fish and fruit, some health-minded individuals may want to consider supplementing with vitamins B, C, D, E along with fish oil capsule to ensure optimal bioavailability of these critical nutrients.

Increase brain function by doing yoga 20 minutes

Sunday, March 2, 2014

Increase brain function by doing yoga 20 minutes - Yoga exercise not only improve physical fitness, but also can improve brain function and focus. Recent research found that just by doing yoga for 20 minutes, a person can improve his brain function.

It is found scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign after observing 30 people. Measured participants brains using a memory test. As a result, participants who did yoga for 20 minutes are known to be fast and accurate in performing the test compared to those who do jogging or using a treadmill for 20 minutes.

"Yoga is an ancient Indian science and way of life that not only involves physical movement but also keep breathing and meditation," said researcher as reported by the NY Daily News.

By following yoga practice, participants had a better ability to focus their mental, respond to information more quickly, accurately, and be able to learn and remember better than other exercise participants.

The process of breathing makes the mind more calm and prevent bad thoughts to come. In a separate study published last month, researchers also found that doing yoga twice a week can lower blood pressure. In a study led by Dr Debbie Cohen of the University of Pennsylvania was observed 56 men and women for 34 weeks.

Altering Lifestyle Habits Halt Brain Shrinkage and Cognitive Decline

Saturday, February 15, 2014

The result of a new study published in the journalNeurology (the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology) has found that poor lifestyle habits and related health disorders such as smoking, overweight and obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure cause brain shrinkage and cognitive decline.

Researchers determined that these conditions when present during middle age predicated lower brain volume and precursor markers for dementia up to a decade later. Identifying and controlling these risk factors early is a critical step in preventing loss of cognitive function and memory in later life.

Detrimental Lifestyle Practices Directly Impact Brain Health
To conduct the study, researchers examined a cohortof 1,352 people with an average age of 54 from the Framingham Offspring Study. The participants were weighed and body mass index and waist circumference were established along with blood pressure and cholesterol tests and blood glucose readings to detect for diabetes. Additionally, MRI brain scans were completed over the course of a decade with the first test performed seven years after the original biomarker benchmark.

Researchers found that those participants with high blood pressure developed a condition identified as `white matter `hyperintensities` or small areas of damage to the delicate vessel structure of the brain. Hypertensive participants were much more likely to demonstrate worsening scores on tests of executive function compared to those with normal blood pressure readings. The study authors found that this single factor negatively affected planning and decision making processes and corresponded with five to eight years of premature chronological brain aging.

Smoking Cessation and Controlling Diabetes and Obesity Key to Improved Cognition
Diabetes in middle age was associated with loss of brain volume in the memory-forming hippocampus region at a much faster rate than non-diabetics. Smokers were found to experience both accelerated brain volume shrinkage and white matter hyperintensities at a much faster rate than non-diabetic participants that did not smoke. Obese individuals were in the top quarter of those most likely to display loss of executive function and rapid rate of cognitive decline.

The lead study author, Dr. Charles DeCarli concluded that the four studiedrisk factors “provide evidence that identifying these risk factors early in people of middle age could be useful in screening people for at-risk dementia and encouraging people to make changes to their lifestyle before it`s too late”. Poor lifestyle choices are well known to contribute to a host of potentially lethal conditions and this body of research continues to add to the existing evidence. Health-conscious individuals will insist on a well balanced reduced calorie, low-ined carbohydrate diet along with regular physical activity to prevent obesity, hypertension, diabetes and cognitive decay.

Toxic Compounds in Fried Foods Cause Cancer and Brain Deterioration

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Many health-minded individuals understand that eating fried or overcooked foods is unhealthy due to the chemical transition of normally stable fats to trans-fats that have been shown to dramatically increase heart attack risk. Researchers from the University of the Basque in Spain publishing in the journalFood Chemistry are the first to discover compounds released from common cooking oils that significantly increase the risk of neurologic degenerative diseases and a variety of different cancers.

Breakdown chemical structures known as aldehydes are formed in cooked vegetable oils such as sunflower oil when heated to normal frying temperatures, and are also released into the air where they can be inhaled. Alternate food preparation methods such as roasting, steaming and broiling are safe methods of cooking foods to avoid the dangerous release of aldehydes and afford a shield against cancer forming particles and neurodegenerative decline.

Many Common Vegetable Oils Produce Dangerous Aldehydes When Heated
Prior studies have identified the health degrading nature of aldehydes, where their presence in organisms is linked to different types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimersand Parkinsons. Researchers also know that these compounds remain in vegetable oils after they have been used to fry foods and wanted to determine how they interact with proteins, hormones and enzymes in the body to impede its correct functioning.

The studyteam heated three types of oil (olive, sunflower and flaxseeds) in an industrial deep fryer at 190 degrees Celsius for a period of forty hours (twenty hours was used for the flaxseed oil). This length of time was used to approximate oils used commercially at a restaurant where fryers remain heated for extended periods of time. The oils were then analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry techniques.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a Healthier Oil for Cooking
Researchers found that the sunflower and flaxseed oils degraded significantly and are the ones that create the most toxic aldehydes in the least amount of frying time. These oils are high in polyunsaturated fats (linoleic and linolenic) and breakdown quickly to form the health-demoting aldehyde compounds that permeate the air and penetrate into the food. Olive oil, known to be high in monounsaturated fat, generates aldehydes to a lesser degree and after cooking much longer.

The research team concluded “The fact that significant concentrations of these toxic compounds were found in some oils … is a cause of concern for human health.” Although the scientists did not use coconut oil in their tests, studies have shown that the medium-chain fatty acid does not rapidly convert to deadly trans fats when heated, and may be less likely to produce aldehydes when compared to other vegetable oils. While fried foods are not part of a healthy eating plan, it is important to avoid cooking with low flash-point oils that produce aldehydes and increase the risk of neurologic disorders and cancer.

Vitamin D and Curcumin Synergistically Clear Brain Tangles to Prevent Alzheimer’s Dementia

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

New diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease cases continue to mount at an unprecedented rate, threatening both the lives of those suffering from this dreaded illness and the health care system itself, as billions are spent to care for the millions suffering from this lifestyle-mediated disease. New hope is now offered by scientists from the University of California publishing in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, as they have identified the specific intracellular mechanism regulated by vitamin D3 that may help the body clear the brain of amyloid beta.

There has been scant evidence in the past to show that vitamin D and the curry-derived compound, curcumin help to prevent Alzheimer’s dementia. Researchers now provide solid research-based science to explain the precise pathway used by these two natural substances to help stimulate the immune system to activate key genes involved in clearing the amyloid-beta protein.

Vitamin D3 and Curcumin Works Together to Clear Deadly Brain Plaques
Chief study author, Dr. Milan Fiala noted“This new study helped clarify the key mechanisms involved, which will help us better understand the usefulness of vitamin D3 and curcumin as possible therapies for Alzheimers disease.” Prior research has suggested a synergistic effect between the two compounds and clearance of deadly protein tangles, but no action pathway has ever been postulated until now.

To test their hypothesis, scientists took blood samples from a group of currently diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease patients and a control group of healthy volunteers. They then isolated the immune-stimulating component of the white blood cells called macrophages. These special cells are known to target and eliminate amyloid fibrils and other waste products that accumulate in the brain before they manifest into detectable disease conditions.

Researchers then incubated some of the extracted immune cells for a 24 hour period in a solution containing the active form of vitamin D3 (1a, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3). Other cells were exposed to a standardized curcumin extract. Past studies have shown that there are two types of macrophages, Type I and Type II that independently perform different functions, yet must work together to effectively remove amyloid protein in the brain.

Supplement with Vitamin D Daily to Attain Optimal Blood Saturation Levels
The scientists found that Type I macrophage activity is greatly enhanced with optimal saturation of vitamin D3, and Type II immune cells are supported by the presence of curcumin. Researchers found that the action of both Type I and II macrophages are greatly enhanced by the synergistic application of vitamin D3 and curcumin together. Dr. Fiala concluded“Our findings demonstrate that active forms of vitamin D3 (and curcumin) may be an important regulator of immune activities of macrophages in helping to clear amyloid plaques.”

Proof positive now exists to support maintaining optimal blood saturation levels (50 to 70 ng/mL) of vitamin D as measured using the simple and inexpensive 25(OH)D test. Most people will need to supplement with 5,000 to 7,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day or rely on sun exposure to obtain ideal levels. Adding curcumin to your regular diet using natural curry-enriched foods or supplementing (300 to 500 mg per day standardized to 95% total curcuminoids) will provide a synergistic effect shown to help clear brain tangles and prevent Alzheimer’s dementia.

Milk Thistle Protects the Liver Heart and Brain

Friday, February 7, 2014

The liver is one of the most critical organs essential to human health. It serves more than 300 functions in the body to detoxify against chemical and environmental intrusions, and promotes metabolic function as well. Silymarin is commonly known as milk thistle and new science is emerging to validate the healing potential of this powerful plant.

Publishing in the journalHepatitis Monthly, researchers provide solid evidence that natural milk thistle extracts can halt and even reverse the effects of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), an affliction affecting as much as a third of the adult population. Supplementation with milk thistle will dramatically lower the risks associated with fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis and cognitive dysfunction.

Milk Thistle is a Powerful Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Agent
NAFLD is a significant health concern that is growing at an unprecedented rate due to the obesity and diabetes epidemic currently gripping most western societies. The condition is caused in part by excess accumulation of fats (triglycerides) in the cellular matrix of the liverthat result in suboptimal function of the organ. Left unchecked, the disease can result in cell injury and damage, inflammation and ultimately to cirrhosis as the liver becomes less able to perform the multitude of tasks essential to life.

Researchers found that the plant extract has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and becomes concentrated in hepatic tissue soon after ingestion. They found that silymarin promotes liver tissue regeneration by supporting multiple critical metabolic functions including lower oxidized LDL cholesterol levels, regulation of membrane permeability and stability and preventing the deposition of collagen fibers, leading to cirrhosis. In addition, milk thistle inhibits the absorption of many toxins, effectively preventing them from entering circulation through the bloodstream.

Silymarin from Milk Thistle Fight Arterial Hardening and Cancer
Silymarin is known to be a powerful cellular antioxidant with specific properties that can prevent excess oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Oxidized LDL cholesterol particles are sticky and become lodged in the delicate endothelial layer of coronary artery vessels where they combine with other blood-borne compounds to form plaque. Natural milk thistle extracts (570 mg per day) have proven effective to lower risk factors that promote arterial hardening.

Milk thistle has been used as a chemopreventive agent in the fight against certain cancer lines, most notably metastatic cancers of the prostate. Silymarininterferes with cancer growth and immortality, and exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-metastatic activity (prevents cancer spread). Extracts of milk thistle have also been used as an agent in the war against numerous malignancies including those of the liver, colon and skin.

Our body is continually under assault from a barrage of more than 70,000 chemicals and 900 drugs known to induce liver damage. Milk thistle supplementation provides an effective tool to protect and heal our primary filtration organ, the liver. Silymarin is also proving to be an important tool that can naturally lower cancer risk, while providing critical support for the heart and prostate.
