Reading Nutrition Labels to Assist Weight Loss
Wednesday, May 21, 2014
(Article first published as Reading Nutrition Labels Assists Weight Loss, Improves Health on Technorati.)
The information you need to avoid foods which will encourage weight gain or promote poor health is required reading on every nutrition label. The problem is many people are unable to decode the gibberish and misleading terms used to disguise the worst food ingredients. It seems as though there should be a special encyclopedia to help the consumer avoid the most dangerous health degrading components of their favorite processed food staples.
Food manufacturers use very subtle deception to make you think their food is lower in calories at a quick glance. They post unrealistic serving sizes to make the calories appear less, with the knowledge that most people will eat much more than the paltry serving size listed.
Many people with an interest in their health are avoiding added sugar and high fructose corn syrup when they read nutritional labels, understanding that these additives cause metabolic imbalance and lead to weight gain. Manufacturers know this and now want to be able to call high fructose corn syrup simply corn sugar on nutritional labels. This is yet another example of the deceitful marketing tactics which are permitted to continue, making it difficult to avoid dangerous chemicals in our food supply.

Finding the Proper Tools to Assist Weight Loss
Of course, the best rule of thumb would be to eat food in their natural form, easily avoiding all the deadly sugar and processed carbs and chemicals hiding in most foods. Foods which will help you drop weight and promote health don’t have an ingredient list or use names which are difficult to pronounce. The reality is that foods manufactured in a food laboratory are a part of our diet, and we need to become savvy about what is in the foods we eat to preserve health and lose weight.
The results of a study published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs, found that people who want to lose weight are much more likely to read nutrition labels, and note that this may have an even larger impact on weight loss than regular exercise. There is still much confusion about serving size, sugar and carbohydrate content and ingredient listing for many who try to decipher the typical nutrition label. Understanding the buzz words to watch for will help you to drop weight and naturally promote health.
Tip 1: Watch Calories per Serving

Look caully when purchasing at the store and be certain you understand that often the calories listed in bold are most likely half of what you will end up eating. Once you realize how quickly most processed foods add on the calories, you’ll want to substitute fruit, vegetables, or a reduced calorie option to hit your daily target.
Tip 2: Trans Fat, Saturated Fat and Cholesterol
The fat category creates much confusion for many consumers. We have been so conditioned by pharmaceutical ads to avoid cholesterol that we end up choosing high carb, low fat foods which ruin health. Saturated fats and cholesterol from foods are not the problem, and do not contribute to poor health or excess weight as long as they are eaten uncooked and accounted for as part of your daily caloric goal. Trans fats should be avoided entirely, and be sure to watch for hydrogenated fats on the label. There is no safe level of these deadly fats which increase your risk of heart disease by 25%.
Tip 3: Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup and Corn Sugar

Reading nutritional labels is becoming an important tool used my many weight and health conscious consumers. Look at every label before you purchase, with a watchful eye for serving size, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup and learn the variety of names these ingredients lurk behind. By eliminating poor food choices, you’ll be able to reach your weight loss target quicker and avoid the health pitfalls of eating a diet high in artificial chemicals.
Breastmilk is able to save the lives of premature babies
Breastmilk is able to save the lives of premature babies - Premature birth of a baby can be life threatening. One of them is the risk of disease in the gut area deadly. But new research from the University of Pittsburgh stated that the composition of Breastmilk a baby can save lives.
About one in every 14 babies born prematurely in the United States and Canada suffering from necrotizing entercolitis (NEC), a disease that causes intestinal tissue destroyed.
"Within 10 days after birth, the baby began to vomit, and a few hours later, the stomach so bloated and discolored," said researcher Dr. David Hackam.
Doctors did not have a choice but to lift the dead intestinal tissue. Even so, half of premature infants suffering from the condition died.
Previous research had mentioned that Breastmilk is able to reduce the risk of NEC in premature infants condition. But in many cases, Breastmilk is hard to come by, so the only formula-fed infants.
As reported by Medical Daily, Dr. Hackam and his team of researchers found that the Breastmilk components associated with the bacteria in the babys gut. Meanwhile, the baby was born without any bacteria. So as to stimulate the bacterial colonies, need Breastmilk from mother to baby.
Although the new study conducted laboratory experiments on mice, Dr. Hackam believe that premature human infants will also get similar benefits from Breastmilk. Because since the first Breastmilk is known to provide many benefits for the baby.

Vitamin D may reduce risk of uterine fibroids according to NIH study
Women who had sufficient amounts of vitamin D were 32 percent less likely to develop fibroids than women with insufficient vitamin D, according to a study from researchers at the National Institutes of Health.
Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomata, are noncancerous tumors of the uterus. Fibroids often result in pain and bleeding in premenopausal women, and are the leading cause of hysterectomy in the United States.
The study of 1,036 women, aged 35-49, living in the Washington, D.C., area from 1996 to 1999, was led by Donna Baird, Ph.D., a researcher at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of NIH. Baird and her collaborators at The George Washington University and the Medical University of South Carolina screened participants for fibroids using ultrasound. They used blood samples to measure the primary circulating form of vitamin D, known as 25-hydroxy D. Those with more than 20 nanograms per milliliter of 25-hydroxy D were categorized as sufficient, though some experts think even higher levels may be required for good health. The body can make vitamin D when the skin is exposed to the sun, or vitamin D can come from food and supplements.
Study participants also completed a questionnaire on sun exposure. Those who reported spending more than one hour outside per day also had a decreased risk of fibroids. The estimated reduction was 40 percent. Although fewer black than white participants had sufficient 25-hydroxy D levels, the estimated reduction in prevalence of fibroids was about the same for both ethnic groups.
"It would be wonderful if something as simple and inexpensive as getting some natural sunshine on their skin each day could help women reduce their chance of getting fibroids," said Baird.
Baird also noted that, though the findings are consistent with laboratory studies, more studies in women are needed. Baird is currently conducting a study in Detroit to see if the findings from the Washington, D.C., study can be replicated. Other NIEHS in-house researchers, led by Darlene Dixon, D.V.M., Ph.D., are learning more about fibroid development, by examining tissue samples from study participants who had surgery for fibroids.
"This study adds to a growing body of literature showing the benefits of vitamin D," said Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., director of NIEHS and the National Toxicology Program.

Avandia Linked to Bone Loss in Mice
Research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and appearing in this months online issue of Nature Medicine, has shed light on why women in one study who took Avandia (rosiglitazone) had decreased bone density. (See our post from earlier this year: Questions Surrounding Avandia and its Effect on Bone.)Bone is not the static organ many people think. Its constantly being ormed. Cells called osteoclasts break down bone while cells called osteoblasts lay down new bone.
These researchers found that mice given the PPAR-gamma agonist Avandia (Avandia is a thiazolidinedione, a class of insulin-sensitizing drugs under which Actos also falls) had increased activity of their osteoclasts, leading researchers to speculate:
"These findings have potential clinical implications, as they suggest that long-term rosiglitazone usage in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance may cause osteoporosis, owing to a combination of decreased bone formation and increased bone resorption."If more studies support this link, it may necessitate screening patients for osteoporosis before starting or continuing them on these drugs.

How to Treat Acne and Clear Up Your Skin
Ever since I was a teenager, Ive always struggled with that damn acne on my face. Sometimes itll be really bad, other times itll clear up and Ill finally think Im growing out of it. But it never fails to return. Over the years, Ive experimented with just about everything under the sun to treat it (including the sun itself actually). Just off the top of my head, and remember that this goes all the way back to the late 90s...
Stridex pads, Oxy pads, Swiss apricot scrub, probably 5 different types of Clearasil, all varieties of that white spot-treatment cream you put on at night...
More recently Ive tried the hippy route and experimented with different combinations of castor oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, the cod liver oil / butter oil blend...
Ive tried washing it once a day, twice a day, after each meal, every other day, two days a week, once a week on Mondays at 8:00 am sharp...
Ive also tried for as long as I can remember to find a dietary connection to acne. First I thought it was dairy, then gluten, then alcohol, then carbs, then vegetable oils. There were several occasions when I would eat super healthy for weeks and struggle with acne, then go out and party one night, stay up late and drink alcohol, and wake up the next morning with a face clearer than Id seen in weeks. What gives??
In the end, after all those years of experimentation and wasted money, I ended up right back where I began... frustrated, confused, and clueless...
...until recently. Ive been experimenting with something for several months now, since early November, that has worked extremely well for me. It hasnt cleared up my skin completely, but its made a big difference. I rarely break out anymore, but even when I do get the rare pimple here and there, itll be gone in just a day or two. Its pretty incredible.
And youre not going to believe what it is. Its so simple, so obvious in hindsight, that I cant believe I didnt figure it out sooner. It might seem counter-intuitive at first, but it will all make sense when Im through with you. Are you ready?? Heres the secret...
Do nothing.
You heard me. Dont do anything.
I call it the Kunu Protocol. Ive completely given up cleaning my face. I dont use face wash, soap, cream, oil... I even avoid putting water on my face! And yes, that means I shower less. Those of you who know me in real life, have you noticed? Didnt think so.
If you think about this for a minute, it actually makes sense. Look at it from a historical perspective, as I like to do.
First... look at modern hunter-gatherers or even small-scale agriculturalists... people isolated from modern society. They dont suffer from acne. According to the research of Weston A. Price, acne happens concurrently with the introduction of modern, processed food. Its a disease of civilization.
Hence... humans likely never suffered from acne in hunter-gatherer times, accounting for nearly all of our 2.5 million years on this earth.
Did our ancestors use Clearasil? Did they wipe their faces with Stridex pads? Apricot scrub? No.
Did they rinse their faces with water twice a day to keep them clean? Doubtful.
Did they think about cleaning their faces at all?? I dont think so!
Look, Im no expert on the skin and acne, but this is what worked for me. It just makes sense: Stop dousing your face with chemicals and water, and let your skin do its thing with its natural oils. Our faces werent designed for this beating!
I know the Kunu Protocol isnt sexy. Its not glamorous, nor exciting. Youve probably never heard of it before, because it doesnt make anybody any money. But the bottom line is it works. Why not try it, you have nothing to lose!
What about you guys? What are your thoughts on this minimalist approach? And what skin care strategies have worked for you?

| Never mind the hair... focus on the acne. It wasnt excessive, but it was just enough to be a problem. I can remember this night specifically... it definitely ruined my confidence. No one wants to deal with that. |

Motivation Key to Weight Loss Success
Monday, May 19, 2014
(Article first published as Motivation Speeds Weight Loss Results, Keeps Weight Off on Technorati.)
Recent research released from The Journal of Medical Internet Research indicates that people who have lost weight were more than twice as likely to keep the weight off if they kept track of their progress using an online recording system.
This is consistent with studies demonstrating that people lose weight more consistently and faster when they keep a dairy to record all foods eaten each day. Aside from diet and exercise, there are several important steps to help motivate your mind and hit your ideal weight target.
Step 1: The Power of Motivation to Lose Weight
People are much more likely to achieve and maintain their weight loss goal when they’re motivated by others. Losing weight significantly reduces the risk of sudden death from a heart attack, diabetes, stroke, dementia and many cancers, yet many people never attain or maintain their weight goal. The motivation provided by a friend or family member is the missing key to weight loss success for many.
Before beginning your weight loss journey, find somebody who will be able to encourage you when you hit the inevitable low point or plateau in your quest. The encouragement they’ll provide is invaluable, providing the strength and psychological boost to continue toward success. Interestingly, researchers have found that people who are financially incentivized to lose weight achieve a 70% success rate, making money a powerful source of motivation.
Step 2: Eat It, Track It and Don’t Cheat

Since many tracking programs break down fat, carb and protein ratios, you’ll find that highly ined carbs are blocking your road to success, as they cause wild blood sugar surges which tip your metabolism toward fat storage. Be honest with yourself by measuring and weighing foods, and enter them to your log either before or immediately after eating.
Step 3: Set a Food Clock

While proper diet and sufficient exercise are an essential part of a successful weight loss plan, it’s also important to incorporate the resources of mind and motivation. Solicit the help of someone who can motivate you, providing encouragement when you stray off track, and use a menu diary and food clock. Get your mind in the game and you’ll find the added support you need to hit your ultimate weight loss goal, and keep it off for life.
Resveratrol Could Be Key to Fighting Prostate Cancer
Resveratrol, a compound found commonly in grape skins and red wine, has been shown to have several beneficial effects on human health, including cardiovascular health and stroke prevention. Now, a University of Missouri researcher has discovered that the compound can make prostate tumor cells more susceptible to radiation treatment, increasing the chances of a full recovery from all types of prostate cancer, including aggressive tumors.
"Other studies have noted that resveratrol made tumor cells more susceptible to chemotherapy, and we wanted to see if it had the same effect for radiation therapy," said Michael Nicholl, an assistant professor of surgical oncology in the MU School of Medicine. "We found that when exposed to the compound, the tumor cells were more susceptible to radiation treatment, but that the effect was greater than just treating with both compounds separately."
Prostate tumor cells contain very low levels of two proteins, perforin and granzyme B, which can function together to kill cells. However, both proteins need to be highly "expressed" to kill tumor cells. In his study, when Nicholl introduced resveratrol into the prostate tumor cells, the activity of the two proteins increased greatly. Following radiation treatment, Nicholl found that up to 97 percent of the tumor cells died, which is a much higher percentage than treatment with radiation alone.
"It is critical that both proteins, perforin and granzyme B, are present in order to kill the tumor cells, and we found that the resveratrol helped to increase their activity in prostate tumor cells," Nicholl said. "Following the resveratrol-radiation treatment, we realized that we were able to kill many more tumor cells when compared with treating the tumor with radiation alone. Its important to note that this killed all types of prostate tumor cells, including aggressive tumor cells."
Resveratrol is present in grape skins and red wine and available over-the-counter in many health food sections at grocery stores. However, the dosage needed to have an effect on tumor cells is so great that many people would experience uncomfortable side effects.
"We dont need a large dose at the site of the tumor, but the body processes this compound so efficiently that a person needs to ingest a lot of resveratrol to make sure enough of it ends up at the tumor site. Because of that challenge, we have to look at different delivery methods for this compound to be effective," Nicholl said. "Its very attractive as a therapeutic agent since it is a natural compound and something that most of us have consumed in our lifetimes."
Nicholl said that the next step would be to test the procedure in an animal model before any clinical trials can be initiated. Nicholls studies were published in the Journal of Andrology and Cancer Science. The early-stage results of this research are promising. If additional studies, including animal studies, are successful within the next few years, MU officials will request authority from the federal government to begin human drug development (this is commonly erred to as the "investigative new drug" status). After this status has been granted, researchers may conduct human clinical trials with the hope of developing new treatments for cancer.
Zinc is Essential to Improve Brain Communications and Improve Memory
Sunday, May 18, 2014

Zinc is an essential mineral known to improve skin tone, aid wound healing, fight cancer and shorten the length of the common cold. Researchers publishing in the journalNeuron now identify the crucial role this super-nutrient plays in support of memory formation and cognitive stability. Additionally, they have found that zinc may also play a part in controlling the devastating occurrence of epileptic seizures.
For the first time, scientists have been able to watch zinc in action as the nutrient regulates communications between neurons and the hippocampus to improve memory and learning capabilities. Ensuring proper intake of zinc is an important step toward optimal brain function and may prevent cognitive decline as we age.
Zinc Improves Communication between Neurons to Improve Cognition

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center and chemists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology collaborated to study the effects of zincon brain function. Scientists experimenting with mice used a chemical that binds with zinc to eliminate it from the brain of the test animals. They found that in the absence of the mineral, communications between neurons was significantly diminished and that zinc is vital for controlling the efficiency between nerve cells in the hippocampus.
For more than a half century, scientists have understood that high concentrations of zinc are deposited within nerve cells, called vesicles that package the transmitters which enable nerve cells to communicate. The highest concentrations of brain zinc are found among the neurons of the hippocampus that control the high functions of learning and memory.
Researchers Find Zinc Levels in the Brain Control Memory and Learning Functions

By artificially regulating the level of zinc in the brain of the test animals, researchers were able to confirm that eliminating zinc from the neural vesicles also prevented enhanced communication. By increasing levels of the mineral, they were able to significantly restore enhanced communications in the hippocampal region to improve learning and memory capabilities.
The results of this studyconducted using mice can be extrapolated to humans because zinc is known to play a similar role in the brain of both species. Zinc deficiency in the typical western diet is rapidly becoming a serious problem that threatens human health. Due to poor farming practices and the abundance of nutrient-deprived processed foods, many children and adults suffer from a chronic insufficiency of the mineral.
Over time, lack of zinc from dietarysources can result in immune system depression, decline in sexual health and increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline. Ideal dietary sources of zinc include liver, beef and lamb. Vegetarians can include nuts, seeds and peas to obtain the micronutrient. Alternatively, zinc supplements are available (30 to 50 mg per day) to help maintain healthy systemic levels that improve memory, learning and cognition.
Trying To Strangle Health Insurance Exchanges HIEs
Saturday, May 17, 2014
![]() |
| Lets choose the health insurance channel! |
Whats more, juicy anecdotes of failed enrollee expectations (such as unproven cancer treatments in cute bald children) have fueled advocates demands for a generous version of orm (such as a single payer with a rich one-size-fits-all benefit design).
Thats why the Disease Management Care Blog found this Kaiser Health News report interesting. It raises two issues.
1. The Merits of Consumer Shopping.
According to the KHN report, what were reading elsewhere isnt quite true because users of Massachesetts health insurance exchange (HIE) are being flummoxed by a thicket of multiple insurance options with premiums that vary according to provider tiers (some hospitals will cost you more), out of pocket expenses (a.k.a "skin in the game" stuff like co-pays and co-insurance) and exclusions (some things are not covered). As a result, a shopper can expect to spend "six to eight hours" selecting a plan!
The DMCB is shocked, shocked by the specter of consumers having to spend as much time comparison-shopping for health insurance as the typical amount of time used checking out Consumer Reports, scanning the newspapers for sales, seeing if Amazon has a better deal and driving to several electronics stores for that best flat screen, Blu-Ray player or speaker system. Dammit, says the DMCB, buying health insurance is important and it deserves that much time. If an HIE forces consumers to finally pay attention, the DMCB says that is a good thing.
As an aside, the DMCB also points out that the art and science of HIEs are still evolving. With better informatics and user-friendly on-screen interfaces, it should get better. Given governments heavy hand, however, the DMCB predicts HIEs will never match the astonishing slickness of parallel on-line consumer purchasing aids, such as smart iPhone apps.
That being said, however, the Massachusetts experience also speaks to the naive assumptions underlying the Affordable Care Acts HIE provisions. If that remains problematic, consumers will always have the option of letting D.C.s Pete Stark, Max Baucus and Kathleen Sebelius save them time by arranging the details of their insurance for them.
2. Anecdotes and Framing
The underlying tone of the KHN piece vaguely suggests that consumerism and health insurance is a bad thing. From the typical use of a selected negative anecdote, the skeptical visage of the person featured in the article, a "I could not figure it out" sub-headline, the sub-text portrayal of insurers as being intentionally opaque and the prominence given to saving money all paint a picture of a system that is failing.
Good grief, HIEs have just gotten out of the crib and KHNs reporting suggests that the liberal and progressives still want to strangle this toddler. Once again, the DMCB is shocked... shocked.
Ask the Internet Unused Christmas Food Gifts What to do
This week’s Ask the Internet question comes from right here at home, and addresses an issue many of us might be facing in our post-Christmas hazes.
Q: Two years ago, I received several bread mixes and a jar of chocolate sauce for Christmas. The breads were baked and eaten within a month, but the sauce still lingers in the bottom of my pantry. What should I do with it? What do YOU do with food-based Christmas gifts you don’t use and/or never intend to?
A: While the generosity and thoughtfulness of a food present is wonderful, there are zillions of pepperoni sticks and Jordan almonds that will go uneaten this year. What makes it tougher: many of them (see: chocolate sauce) would be of little use to a food bank.
So, readers – what’s your plan for this stuff? Will you re-gift? Will you bring the edibles to a party, or try to pawn them off at the office? Will they simply go in the garbage? Any and all suggestions are welcome in the comment section.
P.S. Good Christmas food stories are highly encouraged.
Want to ask the interweb a question? Post one in the comment section, or write to Cheaphealthygood@gmail.com. Then, tune in next Tuesday for an answer/several answers from the good people of the World Wide Net.

Disease Management for Hypertension A Call to Action
While the population health management service industry has a successful track record when it comes to chronic heart failure, diabetes and asthma, the Disease Management Care Blog thinks, after a quick scan of the literature, that there are fewer studies of its impact on hypertension.A recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) reminds us that thats a problem.
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES) performs interviews and physical examinations of a representative sample of U.S. households. This particular report on the prevalence and treatment of high blood pressure was based on a sample of 20,811 individuals from four 2-year survey cycles that were performed from 2003 to 2010.
Extrapolating from the sample, 66.9 million persons or 30.4% of the U.S. populationn have high blood pressure. Of this population, just over half (54% or 35.8 million) have uncontrolled hypertension. Of these persons, 31 million (or 88%) had been seen by a health care provider in the preceding year. The prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension among those hypertensives with Medicare was 52%. Not having health insurance or having seen a health care provider in the past year increased the risk of untreated and uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Whats more, the DMCB discovered control of hypertension doesnt appear to be getting better over time.
The good news is that the treatment of high blood pressure is not all that complicated and that team-based non-physicians can play an important role. Patients should be engaged on weight control, a DASH diet, restricting salt, exercise and moderating alcohol intake. Medication therapy can be individualized and tailored to meet mutually agreed-upon goals and to minimize any barriers. Check out this MMWR table and youll see erences to "lifestyle counseling," "self monitoring," "self-management education."
Given the looming shortage of primary care care settings and the coming influx of newly insured persons, the DMCB believes population health management will need to be part of the solution. In addition to the established science, the industry 1) understands the importance of risk stratification, 2) can be bolted onto accountable care arrangements and 3) understands that optimal outcomes are somewhere between 46% and 100% control.
Hopefully, given the relative dearth of high quality studies, this opportunity will be accompanied by ongoing studies of outcomes.

Gender Bending Chemicals in Food Packaging Linked To Breathing Problems in Babies
Friday, May 16, 2014
A gender-bending chemical found in food packaging is linked to breathing problems in young babies, researchers have found.
A study showed pregnant mothers with the highest levels of bisphenol A in their bodies were twice as likely to have babies who suffer from wheezing in their first six months.
Wheezing in babies can be a symptom of lung damage, asthma, bronchitis, allergies or an infection.
Bisphenol A, or BPA, which is used to harden plastics, is one of the world’s most widely manufactured chemicals and can be found in dozens of everyday items including baby bottles, CD cases and food and drink packaging.
If you use water bottles or plastic of any kind (#3, #7, etc), conventionally packed products of any kind or cans and insulated cartons of any kind, chances are you have been exposed to BPA.
Human studies have found BPA in many tissues and fluids, including urine, blood, breast milk, the amniotic fluid of pregnant women and the antral fluid of mature follicles. A national survey conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2003-2004 found BPA in 93 percent of the 2,517 people (age 6 and up) who were tested.
Because the chemical mimics oestrogen, many scientists believe it interferes with the way hormones are processed by the body.
Previous research from North Carolina State University and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) showed significant reproductive health effects in rats that have been exposed to bisphenol-A (BPA) at levels equivalent to or below the dose that has been thought not to produce any adverse effects.
Although several animal studies have shown it to be safe, others have linked Bisphenol A to breast cancer, liver damage, obesity, diabetes and fertility problems.
The latest U.S. study looked at the BPA levels of 367 pregnant women, with researchers at Penn State College of Medicine measuring levels of the chemical in expectant mothers in the 16th and 26th week of pregnancy.
They found 99 per cent of women had measurable levels of the chemical in their bodies – and those with the highest levels in their 16th week were twice as likely to have babies who wheezed at six months old than women with the lowest levels.
However, the study also found that high concentrations of BPA at 26 weeks and at birth were not connected to the condition.
Some experts suggest exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals causes the most harm during a crucial window of development early on in pregnancy, and believe women of child-bearing age should avoid products containing BPA.
Elizabeth Salter-Green, director of the Chemicals, Health and Environment Monitoring Trust, said: ‘This new research adds further weight to the need to reduce our exposure to this chemical, particularly pregnant women.
It is the foetus developing in utero that is most vulnerable to BPA exposures.’
Last year Denmark became the first country in the EU to ban BPA in packaging for food and drink aimed at under-threes, while the EU itself voted to ban it from baby bottles last year. Canada and three U.S. states have also introduced restrictions.
Adam J. Spanier, lead author of the study, which was presented at a conference in the U.S. yesterday, called for more research into BPA

3 Ways to easily sharpen brain function
Thursday, May 15, 2014
3 Ways to easily sharpen brain function - The brain is one of the vital organs in the body. Without a healthy brain, then we can not do the activity properly. Its important to maintain brain health every day. Here are three keys that keep the brain healthy, Care2 reported.
1. Nutritious foods and supplements
One of the brain is the biggest enemy of excessive free radicals. To combat that, you have to give him super nutrients from food and supplements rich in antioxidants. Blueberries are a rich source and has been shown to protect neurons from oxidative stress (a condition in which the amount of free radicals in the body exceeds the bodys capacity to neutralize it). Other foods rich in antioxidants is nuts, berries, salmon and spices.
For a supplement, you can regularly take vitamin E because it is associated with cognitive health. Additionally select supplements containing curcumin because the active ingredient in it can prevent Alzheimers disease.
2. Sport
Several studies have shown a close relationship between exercise and improved brain function. The study found women over 65 who walked 30 minutes a day will have a slower cognitive decline. People who regularly exercise can boost brain power. By exercising increases blood flow to the brain so that the adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients.
3. Meditation
Meditation is an activity that calms the mind and body. If you are a regular meditation, a lot of positive changes that you can to the brain. This activity can prevent brain shrinkage, improve brain function, improving relations between nerves, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as sharpen the thinking brain. Meditate on a regular basis. No need for long, just 10 minutes each day.
Follow the three tips above to get strong and healthy brain.

5 Ways to Get Your Parents Or Anyone Really to Try New Foods
Wednesday, May 14, 2014
Weve all been there with our parents – the same ol restaurant, with the same ol menu– because theyre reluctant to try something new, strange, or simply unappealing. And theres nothing intrinsically wrong with that, per se. People like what they like, and odds are, your parents eating habits have been pretty set for decades.
But wouldnt it be nice to try something else for a change?
Convincing your folks to move on to new cuisines and cultures can be a wonderful experience for all involved, and not just because kimchee is awesome. "Ethnic" foods, or foods found outside your traditional cuisine, are frequently:
1) Pay for it. Sometimes, older folks (actually, any folks) simply dont want to blow money on something theyre not sure theyll like. So, pick an inexpensive restaurant and treat em. Think of it as an adventure you dont need hiking boots for.
2) Start at home. Prepping a meal for mom? Throw in a teriyaki side dish or a plate of pierogies. By surrounding a new food with ones she likes, it may seem more approachable.
3) Order a gateway food. Introducing your parents to a mild dish – one with a less-assertive flavor, similar to a recipe they might already love. Pad Thai is way Americanized, but its an effective tool for getting reluctant eaters into more daring Thai Food. For me, lassis and samosas were the gateway dishes to a lot of delicious Indian cuisine.
5) Know when to accept defeat. My dad will never, ever, ever develop a love of curry, no matter how many "mmm … slurp … ahhh" sounds I make while eating a big ol bowl of it. And that is totally, 100% fine. Not everyone has similar tastes, and pushing a loved one too hard can (seriously) get pretty annoying. Food should be a joy, not a struggle. Move on.
Opening parents - and anyone, really - up to new cuisines, and as a result, new cultures, is something from which we can all benefit. Happy eating.

- Less expensive: When HOTUS and I order Chinese takeout, we can turn $15 into dinner that night and lunch for the office the next day. While not as cheap as home cooking, its darn comparable.
- Healthier: Okay, so the ghee (clarified butter) in Chicken Korma wont put it on the happy side of the Eat This, Not That list, but non-traditional dishes can often pack in vegetables, lean cuts of meat, and healthy oils. Compared especially to most American-style restaurant meals, ethnic food is frequently a lighter choice.
- Educational: By eating foods outside of your customary cultural cuisine, youre exposing yourself to a new world of ingredients, flavor combinations, and styles of preparation, which you can then implement at home.
- Delicious: Mmm. Take two bites of baba ghanoush and call me in the morning.

Hokkaido Milk Bread We Knead to Bake 3
Tuesday, May 13, 2014
Hokkaido milk bread, super spongy bread prepared with the famous Asian bread making method called tangzhong method. Tangzhong method goes for a water roux, this roux is the prominent ingredient to get fantastic soft breads. For our this months We knead to bake, a month baking event started by Aparna of My Diverse Kitchen, she challenged us to make this Hokkaido Milk Bread which is well known for their super softy texture. Its quite popular in South Asian bakieries, some people says this is a Japanese bread, because of the milk used in this bread comes from Japan. While others says that its pure white colour and the texture resemble the pristineness of Hakkoido.
Coming to Tangzhong method, this method need a part of bread flour with 5parts of water, when cooked its forms the famous water roux. The gluten in the bread flour and water mixture absorb the moisture and create a leavening action. When Tangzhong is added to other ingredients of the bread dough, its gives a light, tender and fluffy bread. The dough prepared with tangzhong is a versatile dough, we can make palin loaf, dinner rolls or muffin like rolls. You can fill very well them with sweet or savoury filling.I prepared few mini loaves, some muffins rolls and tried my hands in making some animals. I filled my mini loaves and muffin rolls with chocolate chips and my kids just loved them.

For Tangzhong (water roux)
1/3cup all purpose flour
1/2cup Water
1/2cup Milk
For dough:
2+1/2cups All purpose flour
3tbsp Sugar
1tsp Salt
2tbsp Milk powder
2tsp Instant dry yeast
1/2cup Milk
1/8cup Cream
1/3cup Tangzhong (use half of the tangzhong )
25grms Butter (cut as small pieces & softened)
1cup Chocolate chips
Making the water-roux:
Mix the flour in water and milk well without any lumps.
Cook in medium low heat, stirring continously with a whisk to prevent buring. This mixture will becomes thickens, if you are able to see some lines for every stir you make with the spoon, your tangzhong is ready, remove it from the heat.
Transfer it to a clean bowl, cover with a cling wrap sticking on the surface of the tangzhong to pect from drying. Let cool completely. You can use tangzhong straight away once it cools down to room temperature.

Making Dough:
Put the flour, salt, sugar, milk powder and instant yeast in a stand mixer or in a food processor and mix it for a few minutes, meanwhile in an another bowl, mix the milk, cream and tangzhong until smooth and add to the mixer.
Run in slow speed until the dough comes together, now add the butter and knead it until you get a smooth and elastic dough.
Arrange the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a towel and keep it aside until the dough double in volume. Mine took almost an hour.
Place the dough in a cleaned working surface, divide the dough to make mini loaves or muffins or else as single loaf.
Roll out each portion of the dough with a rolling pin as a oval shape, sprinkle generously the chocolate chips.
Take one end of the dough from the shorter side of the oval to fold in the middle of the dough, take the other end and fold it slightly to overlaps the other fold.
Arrange this folded dough to tha prepared pans and cover with a towel, let the dough sit again for an hour.

Preheat the oven to 325F, caully brush the tops of the rolls and the loaf with milk and bake them for 20-25minutes until they are done.
Let them cool completely in the tins and then unmould, transfer to a rack and cool them completely.
Serve the loaves or dinner rolls with your favourite spreads.

5 Tips to prevent cavities in toddlers
5 Tips to prevent cavities in toddlers - If not maintained properly, the baby teeth can be easily damaged and decayed or commonly called cavities. 10 Ways to Detoxify Your Body
Monday, May 12, 2014
Three naturopathic physicians share insight on why and when to detox, what type of detox program is right for you, and 10 ways to start.
"The body has its own natural healing system "Detoxification enhances this system,"
How Does Detoxification Work?
Basically, detoxification means cleaning the blood. It does this mainly by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. However, when this system is compromised, impurities arent properly filtered and every cell in the body is adversely affected.
A detox program can help the bodys natural cleaning process by:
1) Resting the organs through fasting;
2) Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body;
3) Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;
4) Improving circulation of the blood; and
5) Refueling the body with healthy nutrients.
"Detoxification works because it addresses the needs of individual cells, the smallest units of human life," says Bennett.
How Do You Know if You Need to Detoxify?
Bennett suggests that everyone should detox at least once a year. A short detoxifying program is generally safe; in fact, scientific studies show that a detox is beneficial for health. However, Bennett cautions against detoxifying for nursing mothers, children, and patients with chronic degenerative diseases, cancer or tuberculosis. Consult your health care practitioner if you have questions about whether detoxing is right for you.
Today, with more toxins in the environment than ever, "its critical to detox," says Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., the author of Detoxification (Healthy Healing Publications). Page recommends detoxing for symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies or low-grade infections; bags under the eyes; a distended stomach even if the rest of your body is thin; menstrual difficulties; or mental confusion.
Where Do You Begin?
First, lighten up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, ined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Also, minimize use of chemical-based household cleaners and personal health care products (cleansers, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes), and substitute natural alternatives.
Another deterrent to good health is stress, which triggers your body to release stress hormones into your system. While these hormones can provide the "adrenaline rush" to win a race or meet a deadline, in large amounts they create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. So its a good idea to detox stressful life situations along with detoxifying your body. Yoga and meditation are simple and effective ways to relieve stress by resetting your physical and mental reactions to the inevitable stress life will bring.
Which Detox Program is Best for You?
There are many detoxification programs, depending on your individual needs. Many programs follow a 7-day schedule because, as Bennett explains, "it takes the body some time to clean the blood." His program involves fasting on liquids for two days, followed by a caully-planned five-day diet to allow the digestive system to rest. He also advises supplements, herbs, exercise, and practices such as dry-skin brushing and hydrotherapy to enhance circulation.
Page recommends a 3-7 day juice fast (drinking only fresh fruit and vegetable juices and water) as an effective way to release toxins.
Other popular detoxing programs include:
•Cleansing supplement packages, which generally contain fiber, vitamins, herbs and minerals. There are several safe products on the market, with easy-to-follow instructions.
•A routine of drinking only water one day each week — an ancient practice of many cultures.
10 Ways to Help Your Body Detoxify
After a detoxification program, you can cleanse your body daily through diet, supplements and lifestyle practices.
1. Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.
2. Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea.
3. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins.
4. Drink at least 2 quarts of water daily.
5. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system.
6. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions.
7. Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.
8. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration.
9. Dry-brush your skin or try detoxifying patches or detox foot spas / foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores.
10. What is the most important way to detoxify? "Exercise," says Bennett. "Yoga or jump-roping are good. One hour every day." Also try qigong, a martial-arts based exercise system that includes exercises specifically for detoxifying or cleansing, as well as many other exercises with specific health benefits.

3) Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;
Eliminate Soda to Lose Weight
(Article first published as Top Tips to Lose Weight by Eliminating Soda on Technorati.)
Soda consumption has increased three-fold over the past half century and the addition of high fructose corn syrup in the 70’s has in large part fueled the present obesity epidemic. More than 20% of the sugar in our diet comes from sweetened beverages and nutritional researchers indicate that for every additional daily serving, the risk of obesity increases by a factor of 1.6. Drinking diet soda also hampers weight loss efforts as the artificial chemicals used to sweeten these drinks play havoc with your appetite control hormones, meaning you don’t get the signal to stop eating.
The impact of sugary drinks and empty calories has caused more than 23 million children and adolescents to fall into the overweight or obese classification. This will have a significant impact on their future health as the risk for many chronic diseases, especially heart disease and diabetes rises dramatically with excess weight.
Nothing is more reshing and thirst quenching than an ice cold glass of fresh brewed iced tea or a glass of filtered water. Stay away from pre-mixed teas and opt for brewing your own tea or make a pitcher of sun tea. You can brew black, green or white tea and add the all natural no-calorie sweetener stevia to suit your taste. Both tea and water provide essential hydration which will hold your appetite in check.

Empty Calories Drive Obesity and Disease Rates

An article published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association concludes with the chilling statement, "High added sugar consumption which occurs most commonly in the form of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a constellation of cardiovascular risk factors, both independently, and through the development of obesity.” You can modify the soda drinking habit for you and your family by following these health promoting tips.
Tip 1: Employ Mind Over Matter for Your Health
You have to make a firm commitment to flush sweetened and diet beverages from your diet. For many people, soda is habit forming and very difficult to eliminate from the diet. Go slowly by cutting one serving every few days until you officially kick the habit. Some research indicates that the caffeine in many soft drinks can have a mild addictive effect, so you’ll need to be strong in your resolve to cut soft drinks from your diet.
Tip 2: Make the Switch to Fresh Brewed Tea and Water

Tip 3: Keep Non-Sweetened Alternatives Handy
Make sure you always have plenty of cold alternative drinks ready to serve at a moment’s notice. One of the most appealing attributes of soda and fruit juices is that they’re readily available and provide a fast sugar rush which many people mistakenly believe results in more energy. The sugar high is temporary as blood sugar spikes out of control and drops quickly, forcing you to go for another jolt. Naturally sweetened tea and water provide essential hydration without the dangerous metabolic swing.
Empty calories from soda and fruit juice consumption account for a disproportionate number of calories consumed for many children and adults. Extensive research details the negative effects of these drinks on our long term health and increasing waistlines. You can slowly cut back and eliminate sweetened beverage by substituting healthy fresh brewed teas and water once you’ve made a permanent commitment to make the switch. Cutting these nutrient void drinks will have a lasting and beneficial effect on your health and weight loss goals.
