Sleep Too Little or Too Much Linked to Diabetes in Men

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Researchers from New England found that men who slept either less than 6 hours, or greater than 8 hours, increased their risk for type 2 diabetes. That risk remained after adjustments were made for age, hypertension, smoking status, self-rated health status, education, and waist circumference.

These results suggest that even though you have a handle on your weight, blood pressure and smoking, you may still court a diagnosis of diabetes if your sleep is consistently short-changed, or over-indulged.

The study included 1564, primarily white men, aged 40 to 70, who were enrolled in the Massachusetts Male Aging Study (MMAS), and who did not have diabetes at baseline. The men were followed for up to 15 years. Similar, although less marked results were found in women who partook in the Nurses Health Study.

The study appears in the March 2006 issue of Diabetes Care.

You Can Be Too Clean Report

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

An interesting story from the Daily Record website today, highlighting research from the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health in Aberdeen which suggests that Scots are far too hygenic for their own good.

Speaking in the Record about the findings Dr Denise Kelly of Rowett said:

"We were able to show that environment and early life have a major impact on the type of organisms in your gut when you reach adulthood.

"Then we looked at how the immune system is functioning and again were able to show there is a very big difference in the immune functions."

"The methods we are using are not discriminating, so though we are eliminating harmful pathogens, we are also eradicating a lot of the good organisms."

So, what is your opinion on this research - are we endangering our own and our childrens future health by being too clean?

Recent research has revealed that too much TV can lose the ability to speak and math skills of children. Maximum, children are only allowed to watch two hours of television a day. The addition of hours will increase the risk of children being bullied and lose their ability to speak.

This is expected due to lack of care by parents and lack of physical activities that make children less healthy. This is the first study to look at the link between the old toddlers watch television with their motor skills as well as psychological.

"These findings show the importance of parental supervision when caring for children, and the recommendation for their childrens television watching. Child is only recommended for two hours a day watching television. Too long watching television can have negative effects," said Professor Linda Pagani of the University Montreal led the study, as reported by the Daily Mail.
